Made in Mexico?

For me it's a pride thing to buy something built by Americans. :) Knock on wood we haven't had a lick of trouble so far with our Traverse and we've had it about a year now. I've only had the truck for 3 and a half weeks so it's too early to tell but so far so good!

I believe Ford is the only manufacturer of the big 3 that doesn't have some of their manufacturing processes in Mexico. The engine and transmission assembly plant in Mexico for Chrysler/RAM is state of the art, virtually. The Silao plant is more or less the equivalent for the GM side. Most of the lower volume vehicles(2500-3500) is manufactured in the states, probably to do with the cost of overtime paid to American workers. We produce a lot of engine bearings for GM, Chrysler(includes Ram and Jeep), and Ford. It's insane how many vehicles the big 3 produce

From Wall Street Journal article - "Ford last year built 433,000 vehicles in Mexico, or 14% of its North American production."

And from a Detroit news article;

"Trump also hasn’t mentioned that Ford is not moving to Mexico and has had operations in Mexico for 90 years. Ford currently has 11,300 employees in Mexico, where it builds the Ford Fiesta, Fusion and Lincoln MKZ as well as the hybrid versions of both are manufactured in Mexico. Ford also has an Engineering Center in Mexico, which employs more than 1,100 engineers who support global projects."

This is always a touchy topic but it's the reality of the world today. We have turned into a society that likes to buy a lot of crap we don't need. This has been made possible by cheap foreign manufacturing. It drives me nuts when I go on vacation anywhere in the world and 90% of the souvenirs are made in China. I've always been a little proud the Camaro was build down the street in Oshawa.

simple breakdown.

Colorado/Canyon - USA

Equinox/Terrain - USA

Traverse/Acadia - USA

Silverado/Sierra 1500 single, double cab - USA

Silverado/Sierra 1500 Crew Cab - Mexico

Silverado/Sierra 2500,3500 HD - USA

Tahoe/Suburban/Yukon - USA

It bothered me at first that the exact configuration of GM full size truck that I wanted, the 1500 Crew Cab was Mexican built, but I didn't want to spend Tahoe money and the double cab was not large enough for my needs. I went over the truck with a fine tooth comb, comparing it to a Double Can which I had the dealer pull up right next to it. Could not tell a difference at all in the build quality, I also took some solace in the fact that the Engine and Tranny were assembled here before being shipped down south of the border.

But whenever an idiot makes a blanket statement that GM trucks are made in Mexico, I like to slap them with the above knowledge. Overwhelming majority is made in USA

Mexico doesn't bother me at all. China bothers me.

And Ford does build vehicles in Mexico, just not their trucks - for right now.

Agreed. Working at a tier 2 supplier for aftermarket/OE parts I have noticed that Mexico does a pretty darn good job. We have a manufacturing plant across the border and surprisingly they do very well, also the plant is cleaner and more organized than ours. When there is a quality issue they are on it immediately and find a resolution in a very timely manner.

Basically, it sucks that we can't keep the money in the states and pay American citizens to build parts and assemble. In reality it is much, much cheaper to purchase parts and assemble out of states. The companies need to be profitable and expand, this is a great way to do so.

If I could afford an HD Crew Cab I would have grabbed one in a heartbeat. Sure I could have gotten one for the same price I paid for my double cab but it would have been a work truck trim.

The Tahoe/Yukons are nice (and pricey) and that would be cool as the assembly plant for those is a short drive away. I wish they were doing plant tours.
