Made in Mexico?

So after seeing the VIN country codes I checked all of our current GM vehicles.

 

The 07 Avalanche that was totaled in an accident in Jan was a 3, Mexico. I never knew.

I have a '16 CC to replace the Avie that I will pick up Saturday. I obviously starts with a 3.

 

We have a '15 Sonic Hatch Back the kids drive. If I had to guess it would have guessed it started with a 5. But no it is a 1. (Lake Orion, MI)

 

My wife drives a '08 Buick Enclave. I assumed it would be a 1. But it is a 5. Enclave in Asia, can't be.

I checked the door sticker, it says Lansing, MI.

 

So why does the Buick start with a 5? Do different GM companies use different numbers for country codes? Or do they deviate from this system?

1, 4, and 5 are American. 2 is Canada, and 3 is Mexico

Yup, the Aveo and now the Spark are Korean

 

Definitely a different day and age, stuff is built all over and then shipped to a final assembly point.

 

Case in point, my Caddy was built in Hamtramck (Detroit), the engine in Livonia, and the trans in Ypsilanti. All within a rock's throw. Same for my dad's DTSs.

 

Dad's old Escalade was built in Silao, and so is his new CC.

 

My truck is a Double Cab, so USA built for mine.

 

Fun fact, the 6.2, build code L86, is built at Bowling Green, alongside the LT1 and LT4

Actually the LT1 and the L86 are built at the Tonawanda Powertrain in NY, then they are sent to their respective assembly plants. So yes the L86 6.2 is built alongside the LT1, which makes sense as it is a modified version of the LT1 but they are not built at Bowling Green. I believe Bowling Green only builds the LT4 onsite.

Oh ok...COOL! I saw a video on YouTube about a powertrain facility, and the ticker board read L86 and LT1. I watched a vid on the LT4 just prior, so I just assumed that they were all in the same facility...Thanks for the accurate information

The L83 and the L86 are built in both Tonawanda NY and St Catherines ONT

 

LT1 is built in Tonawanda NY.

 

6L80 and 8L90 trans is built in both Silao and in Toledo

Is there an easy way to figure out which plant the motor was build in? I also see a lot of the standard bed CC have Vins beginning with a 1, so GM seems to be building more of them up here? It also seems the 2500/3500s built here in the US have motors build in Silao. Either way GREAT TRUCKS!!

These trucls are probably assembled better in Mexico.

 

But from my girls crew cab and my double cab you can't tell a difference.

No engines built in Bowling Green. The Corvette is assembled there but all engines and transmission come from other dedicated engine plants.

There are working on it but its not going be building the 6.2L till later this year..................
