05 Z71 transfer case slips into neutral

I have an '05 Silverado Z71. Today, while in 2WD, the transmission went into neutral. No warning, no noise, nada. I selected auto 4wd, and all was good. Put it back in 2WD, then after about 2.5 miles, same thing happened. This routine has continued this morning: Running fine, constant speed (not accelerating or slowing), goes into neutral, put in auto, runs fine, put back in 2WD, fine for a couple of miles, then same cycle. I used 4HI and auto for several days over the weekend for the first time in a year or so, but had no trouble. BTW...when it goes to neutral, the neutral indicator on the transfer switch panel does NOT light up, and there are no other changes in the indicator lights. Maybe related? Help?

I had this happen exactly like you described on my 2006. It ended up being the motor/actuator on the transfer case. It isn't cheap IIRC. Since they dropped the transfer case anyways, the shop put in a case saver while they were at it.

It is the electronic part on the motor that engages the transfer case. You can buy just the electronic part on Ebay or a Dealer for about $70. I replaced mine and problem solved. Take about 3-5 bolts off that hold the motor onto the transfer case after removing the front driveshaft bolts that needs to be out of the way. It was less than 1.5 hours to completely tear down and redo mine.
