My first post and just cruising the forums. My dealer says there has to be 10% or less oil life left for them to change it under the new vehicle program. I changed mine at 1000 miles (because I am and old school motor head that understands how critical those first few oil changes are). Didn't reset the oil life gauge, so I'll still be good with the dealer. I used the Valvoline 0W-20. It was the cheapest I found. I did my research and found that GM is charging a bundle for the dexos licensing, so Valvoline didn't license theirs, and it's much cheaper.

The service department guy at my dealer said that it had to be 20% before GM will pay for it. Wonder who's right?

My salesman told me 25% (???), I just saw a Mobil 1 0w-20 bottle and Mobil Super synthetic 0w-20 bottle the other day at the store and it said Dexos approved on the label

Valvoline Says No to dexos Licensing

Couldn't find anything definitively on the oil changes and oil life. Did come across some interesting stories though:

I was thinking about this and I recalled that someone had posted a link in the rear window recall about what the repair was. When I went to the link it started out with the Corvette stuff. Here is the link again.

If you look on page 2, You will notice that it lists this.

Engine Oil

dexos1™ SAE 5W-30 is the best viscosity grade for the vehicle.

For cold temperature operation, below −20°F (−29 °C), SAE 0W-30 may be used.

TIP: Do not use other viscosity grade oils, such as SAE

10W-30, 10W-40, or 20W-50.

Z51 Performance Package models use the dry sump oil system.

TIP: For track events or competitive driving, Mobil 1™ 15W-50 engine oil must be used.

Being that the 6.2 used in the truck is the same engine. Would the last TIP: apply to the truck engine as well?

aluminum block might be some of the difference compared to steel block in truck?

The engine block for the C7 and the L86 found in the new trucks are identical. In fact, someone posted that even the long block is the same between the trucks and the C7. I guess running 5W-30 in the trucks won't harm the engine, GM probably specified the thinner oil for the trucks for a better MPG.

My service department said 5000 miles and not to pay attention to the DIC during the first free oil changes. It's only 4 oil changes, why would they care how long you go. I honestly think my dealer would change my oil if I pulled out the back bay door and back in the front door. LOL

I think mechanically your are correct but there has to be some subtle little plumbing changes because doesn't the C7 have a drysump oiling system?

There are a couple of topics being discussed here. First, for new 2014 purchases of Silverado and Sierra, we are entitled to free maintenance during the first two years which includes 4 oil changes. My Chevy dealer service manager said at first they required oil life to be at 20% or less. This policy was changed to whatever interval we want. So I had them change imy truck's oil at 2,000 mi which is 6 months of ownership. Personally, I will use these oil changes at 6 months since I don't put on a lot of miles. Each to their own. Not sure if GMC dealers are following this new policy. I am only repeating what I was told.

As far as whether to trust the Oil Life Monitor after the first two years, well that is up to you. There are more opinions on this than I care to repeat, but it really depends on how you drive IMO.

As far as the correct oil to use in the trucks...it is rght in the Owners Manual as follows:

Specification

Use and ask for licensed engine oils

with the dexos1® approved certification mark. Engine oils meeting the requirements for the vehicle should have the dexos1 approved certification mark. This certification mark indicates that the oil has been approved to the dexos1

specification.

{ Caution

Failure to use the recommended engine oil can result in engine damage not covered by the vehicle warranty. Check with your dealer or service provider on whether the oil is approved to the dexos1 specification.

Viscosity Grade

SAE 0W-20 is the best viscosity grade for the 5.3L and 6.2L V8 engines. SAE 5W-30 is the best viscosity grade for the 4.3L V6, and 6.0L V8 engines. Do not use other viscosity grade oils such as SAE 10W-30, 10W-40, or 20W-50.

Cold Temperature Operation: In an area of extreme cold, where the

temperature falls below −29°C (−20°F), an SAE 0W-30 oil may be used in the 4.3L or 6.0L engine. An

oil of this viscosity grade will provide easier cold starting for the engine at extremely low temperatures. When selecting an oil of the appropriate

viscosity grade, always select an oil of the correct specification. See “Specification” earlier in this section for more information.

I hope thiis helps...

Dry sump won't affect oil selection much, All the N/A engines for the C6 use 5w-30 oil, being dry or wet sump. Oil viscosity is mainly selected based on bearing clearances and engine operating conditions.

correct, I was just referring to the claim that the long blocks were the same.
