Patching Sidewalls

I know that if a sidewall is torn, it cant be repaired, but what about a small puncture. Im currently working out a deal to trade my 285/70/17s for a set of 315/70/17 BFG AT KOs, but the guy says that one of the tires has a small leak in it right at the edge of the side-biter tread. He said it leaks down about 5psi per week, so its gonna be a super small hole. My question is, would this tire be salvageable and repairable?

Generally, no shop will accept the liability that comes with patching the sidewall of a tire. That location of the tire is exposed to more stress than any other location.

If you attempt to get the tire patched, expect to be turned away. They'll probably try to sell you a new tire but I doubt they'll patch the punctured one.

I would NEVER patch a sidewall, even if a shop said they would do it "which I highly doubt" its not safe by any means...
work some of the cost of the new tire into the deal, sidewall patching isnt an option IMO

Well, we were working on an even trade. In his mind, even with the hole, it was a good deal because my tires are smaller and generic brand, his are larger and BFGs. I can kinda see that, but I really don't know about the tire with the hole. So, I got on Craiglist and found one to match with less than 500 miles on it for $100. I told him that if no shop would patch the one tire, I would pay for the other one if he went and got it and brought it with him when we made the trade. The more I think about it, the more I want to do it that way. So, if it all works out, I don't think its a bad deal. $100 for a set of 5 35" BFG AT KOs with under 20K on them isn't too bad.

Nah, I'll pass. I don't think it would be a good idea to ride my family around on something like that.

You could always patch it like my buddy did to his atv tire e6a9a8us.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

If you were doing low speed off-roading, you could probably find some way, or put a tube in, but I wouldn't do it on road and certainly not if my family would be riding in there. It's not worth saving a couple bucks at the expense of your family's safety.
