Diverticulitis

Ive been layed up in the hospital since sunday 3am... Sat when I was at work I came down with extremely bad and shooting abdominal pains. Thought it was a stone or UTI. Drank a ton of fluids that night to try and wash out. 2am I could not sleep, could not walk, could not sit... etc. I literally felt like the end was near. Finally went to hospital got there around 3 and went thru the whole million questions and tests. Finally they figured out my white blood cell count was 27! It should be 11.. then on the CT scan they saw the pockets of infected colon. My colon started leaking into my stomach which was poisoning me.

As of now my pain has gone down tremendous and my white blood cell cnt has dropped from 27 to 21 to 17.. In 3 hrs. I will be getting another blood test done to see where it's at. If it drops more I will be good to avoid surgery yet again. If it goes up or stays same good chance I'll need surgery right away to cut out the bad Colon, wear a bag for 5 months and then get it repaired.

Either way goof chance I will need to have surgery down road to repair the bad Colon.

You may have allready Googled this thing but if not please let me inform you of it. It is caused by nuts, popcorn, seeds, etc... anything your body cannot process fully. The colon has little pouches in it and if one of those kernels or nuts get stuck and can u lodge itself , it will get infected and you will be in misery! Please watch what you eat. And if you do eat nuts or anything you can chew better to help it pass. Do so. This is a classic do as I say and not as I do. When I get out I will have a lifestyle change of what I can eat and cant..

I miss my truck and miss work right now!

Please take my advice seriously. This can happen to anyone.

Btw I have not eaten since Saturday at breakfast! Only thing I can currently have are ice chips and gum!

Sounds terrible. I honestly have never heard of it but will be more careful about popcorn seeds. Never thought it could hurt you! Hopefully you don't need surgery.

Good luck. Hope you avoid surgery. You'll need to monitor your diet from here on out. Getting a nice amount of fiber is a good thing. A buddy of mine has lived with this for about 10 years or so with only occasional minor flare-ups, taken care of with a round of antibiotics.

If you do have to have a colostomy and you want some info, contact me. My 79 y.o. mom has had a colostomy for 3 years after diverticulitis. I pretty much know what all is involved.

Sorry to hear that, Im not a doctor so just something that may be worth you looking in to when you heal up. Metamucil fiber supplement I know a ton of people who swear by it. You will need probiotics big time. Again not a doctor but had a very sick wife so life experience. Good luck.

No surgery as of yet. I'm now on a clear liquid diet. Beef broth for lunch.

The crazy thing is i eat broccoli at least 4 days a week. And have been taking prebiotics for the last 2 years since I found it helps the body. I do admit, I'm overweight, but for all 5 he bad stuff I eat. I eat veggies and am extremely active.

Hoping to be out of here in a day or 2...

Good luck with your surgery! My gallbladder almost killed me when I was 17, that darn digestive track of ours can be a pain in the ass... I hope you have a speedy recovery bud.
