OnStar RemoteLink app service?

The location feature is pretty cool. if I let the kid borrow the truck or someone else I can track it and see where it is. Just like Uncle Sam (the gumit) I will be watching. Not very much of a stretch of the imagination to think that the NSA is gathering all this data so they can see where you are at every minute if they want or need to. Neat features but it seems to be an erosion of our privacy rights.

Would definitely consider having a subscription if I had a driving child at home but no need and I also feel the same about the privacy. Just a lil too much info going out that antenna. LOL

I'd bet that data is being collected whether we have a subscription or not.

It probably does. Least I'm not paying for them to do so.

Does the location feature only work if the truck is operating? If I am away from home, and the truck is at home, the app on my iPhone only shows my location, not the truck's.

Now that would be very disappointing, I will have to test that out myself I was always close by the truck the last 24 hours since I hooked up the app and never considered that. Heck I typically know where I am at unless I have had too much to drink so that is not much help is it LOL good catch glioma

How do you monitor where your truck is with onstar?

Sigh I see it now on the onstar site you can SIGN UP AND PAY for what they call a Family Plan so you can track your vehicle yourself just like a NSA agent. I guess that is a big revenue generator for onstar and they will not be giving that away anytime soon. Not sure what it costs but yeah would probably be important for helicopter parents to have.

What is Family Link?

An optional paid service that allows OnStar subscribers to stay connected to their loved ones. Using the OnStar Family Link web site, you can locate an enrolled vehicle at any time. You can also choose to receive vehicle location alerts at any time in the form of email or text message. You select the day, time and frequency of alerts.

Thought I'd check in here. I've had my truck 8 months so my 6 month trial is over. The only thing that stays active is the remote function.

Joe, So you can still remote start and lock / unlock and make the horn blow and lights blink but nothing else correct? If the subscription was a bit cheaper I would sign up but 300 bucks per year seems a bit expensive for what it is. Just seems like a gimmick type thing for revenue generation. You can probably get that snooping/kid trace program done to their cell phone pretty cheaply and easily without all the expense of a onstar subscription plus you know where the little brats are when they leave the vehicle.

The NSA doesn't need OnStar to track you. Your cell phone is all they need.

Enthusiast,

Great question! You will be able to use the key fob functions on your RemoteLink application without an active OnStar subscription, only if you have a 2014 vehicle or newer. Hope this answers your question.

Well that's a bummer about the 48 hour thing. I don't understand about the saving battery issue.
