OnStar RemoteLink app service?

"An active OnStar Directions & Connections or Safe & Sound service plan is required to access most RemoteLink features. However with 2014 OnStar equipped vehicles, when you download and use RemoteLink just once during your OnStar trial or consecutive subscription, you'll unlock access to the RemoteLink Key Fob Services, including Remote Start, Remote Door Lock and Remote Horn and Lights, for five years from date of vehicle delivery.

OnStar RemoteLink Key Fob Services do not include any emergency services, Automatic Crash Response, stolen vehicle assistance, live Advisor service, or Hands-Free Calling. If you sell your GM vehicle or wish to cancel use of OnStar Key Fob Services, you must contact OnStar at 1.888.4.ONSTAR. Subsequent owners will be able to activate the remaining term of the Key Fob Services by calling 1.888.4.ONSTAR."

From my understanding of reading this, I do NOT have to have a regular OnStar account, but just use the remote link app once to activate the key fob services during the trial period. Has any owners tried this with success and not have the Onstar account?? Or does this service require some sort of paid subscription for just this service?? I sure would LOVE to have a remote start and lock/unlock feature on my phone without OnStar!! I guess I could call but I figured I would check here with actual customers instead of some joe schmoe at a desk. Thanks in advance!

That's how it works, if you use the app once during your trial, you get the app for 5 years without having to subscribe to any of there services.

The app is actually really handy. I use it to program directions into my navigation hours before I get into the truck. They just pop right up when I get in and I hit go and im off!

I love the ap for my 2011 but I do have to maintain an OnStar account. I was told I will not need to do that for my 2014.

I downloaded this OnStar app on my droid phone and I actually like it. Good for 5 years Yippeee. I am technology resistant but they made me like it. Sigh I guess it is true resistance is futile.......................

Mine works flawlessly. Takes a 30 or so to load and send the signal.

mine to works excellent. Makes all my Ford and Ram friends envious. As I understand only the remote start, lock and unlock work free for the 5 years.

The location feature is pretty cool. if I let the kid borrow the truck or someone else I can track it and see where it is. Just like Uncle Sam (the gumit) I will be watching. Not very much of a stretch of the imagination to think that the NSA is gathering all this data so they can see where you are at every minute if they want or need to. Neat features but it seems to be an erosion of our privacy rights.
