I'm going to put a 6in lift and 35s on my 2000 GMC Sierra 1500 Z71. With the 5.3 and 4spd, how long is it safe to keep the stock gears before regearing?

I am definitely gearing to 4.88, just a matter of cost of doing it all at once. It's basically all highway driven, takes 4 1400 mile road trips per year, and goes around town at no more than 40mph when not on highway. The road trips do have a lot of hills going through Oregon and Washington. Won't be towing anything until regear is done.

You'll be OK for a short while. I'd actually recommend 4.56 gears instead of 4.88 if you are gonna be doing more highway driving. 4.56 gears should give you the best combo of highway and around town driving.

4.56 is all you need for a half ton to be honest
