Exterior/Interior Rust

c0boy,

How did you go about contacting GM?

They contacted me on here. I haven't gone through the process, but mine is literally the size of a softball. The pictures posted look like a truck from the late 70's/ early 80's. WTF, pathetic. Just call GM customer service, it can't hurt.

I spoke with a GM representative who got me in touch with my local Customer Experience agent at my dealership.

I'm going to have the vehicle inspected by the shop for a "professional opinion"

Not feeling optimistic, but can't hurt.

I ended up bringing it to the body shop and received a "yeah, we see a lot of that."

My local dealership said GM will not warranty nor do anything to the truck.

However, I contacted the dealership I purchased the vehicle from and they are going to strip and re-coat the frame on their own dime. Unfortunately they're about 3 hours away and need to keep the vehicle for a few days.

Nonetheless, I'm happy to get some sort of solution. (And it keeps me from dealing with it myself) I'll post pictures when it's done.

GM sells an aerosol coating that is an exact match to the OEM applied wax. Part number 12346501. Nox Rust X-121B - One Coat Rust Prevention Coating

$12 per can. I had one spot on the body mount gussett that had started to peel. I removed the loose coating, cleaned the area, then applied the new coating. It looks like brand new again.

Picked up the truck today. Go ahead a check out the pictures below. Overall I'm satisfied, especially with how the frame was (shown on page 1) They had a bit of over spray in some areas, but can't expect perfection from a dealership tech. The only thing I wish they would've done was maybe taken the nerf bars off and dropped the spare tired to get more coverage. I'm going to buy a can and touch up a few areas (where the jack feet were, etc).

The stuff they used seems pretty solid, we'll have to see how it holds up.

Great to see it was handled. I had to reschedule my appointment for this, but did confirm with the dealer I'm using they are providing a loaner for me.

Hi c0boy,

I understand that you have an appointment set up with your local dealership regarding your vehicle issue. Please keep us posted on your dealership visit and contact us if you have any lingering questions or concerns.

Is this primarily a GM problem or are the Ford Trucks of this vintage seeing comparable corrosion? Been used truck shopping and always look carefully at the under carriage of anything that I will consider to purchase. Been looking at Yukon XL's but might lean towards an Expedition or Navigator if the corrosion resistance is better...

FYI - have use POR15 in the past and it is pretty amazing stuff - my concern would be reaching the hidden/inaccessible areas like the inside/top of the frame rails. That stuff literally bonds with the rust versus just coating it and never wears off!

I can't really speak to Fords or other brands as I've only owned GM. From what I hear they're all comparable in terms of corrosion resistance, not one significantly better than the other. I also believe it's a coin toss on which vehicle you get. Be sure to inspect carefully before purchasing. A friend of mine has an '07 Silverado, newer body style, and his frame coating is solid, slight rust at the frame edges. Another has a 2010 with only 10,000 miles and it looks worse than the 07. There there's mine that seemed to rust excessively.

It's not Rocket science... I did mine with Rustoleum Rubberized undercoating... no masking no nothing and got better coverage and didnt get any on the tire or anything like that... also spent 2 hours cleaning dirt and rocks out from frame and hard to reach areas with an air hose... you wouldnt believe the crap I got out of it ( holds moisture and promotes rust )

I thought about doing it myself, however I don't have resources (lift to really get underneath, wire wheel, etc) or the time. Still would've been do-able, but labor intensive. Plus I wasn't going to spend a dime if they covered it.
