Pan or Drain Plug?

Recommended Posts

I'm going to be dropping the pan for a filter/fluid change. Trying to decide if I want to find a pan for this 6spd or just drill and install a drain plug in the steel pan.

A pan will probably run $200+ for an aluminum. The drain plug is around $5 from Dorman. So there is a big difference in price!

Thoughts?

I'm assuming there is really no benefit to running an aluminum pan (already sufficient cooling) or added capacity?

Even on a 2500 that already has a standalone cooler?

I could see that in my case because I have already blocked some of the airflow through the bumper with a winch.

yes definitely!. The one they have in that truck is ridiculously undersized. I replaced mine with larger one and the tranny runs a lot cooler all the time, especially when plowing and pulling trailer.

Do quick search here for tranny cooler for 2500hd and you'll find my other post which has all the details on the cooler and replacing it.

High capacity auxiliary cooler and keep it clean is the way to go as others saying.

now another thing to think about if you hit on something, aluminum brittle, fracture etc.. metal pans just bend, means you still come home with trans fluid

I looked for your post, didn't find anything. Should be easy enough to figure out, not the first cooler I've added to a vehicle. I'll probably start watching Summit Racing, see if they run a sale on them anytime soon.

That's my thoughts exactly about an aluminum pan, although the pan is somewhat protected tucked up in the way it is.
