King Coilover Shocks Installed

Kings add about 1" of stroke or 2" of total travel. That's the leverage ratio, 2:1. When I bought mine; installed they provided almost 3" of lift! They were also very near the top of the travel and almost on the limiters. I traded the 750# springs for 600# units and got them back in range and yet not centered in the shocks stroke. The truck has a 4.3 and is 2WD so less nose weight than the average 5.3 4X4 DC. To make it perfect I would trade once more for 500# springs and a slight preload. The factory stops will allow for full range of motion with factory UCA IF the limiters are left in place however rebound will be sacrificed. Would be anyway when the shock strokes out full extension. 500# springs and a bit of preload takes away from coil stack and invites coil bind.

At 4.5 inches of shock travel, an inch over factory you have 9 inches of wheel travel vs 7 inches factory. That is only a half inch more shock stroke either side of centered at the shock. That is a maximum of 1" of lift and still retain the factory rebound range while adding a total 2" to the compression.

Nothing is free. If you want the distance equally split there is no lift. If you accept the 2" lift you sacrifice half the rebound before the shock reaches full extension. Leaving the limiters in will reduce that to about 2" of rebound before the stop is hit but saves the UCA and if you leave the stop in place the ball joint lives a normal happy life. If you take the limiter out the ball joint becomes the stop.

Adding an aftermarket UCA to keep the ball joint alive returns the limit to the shock full extension geometry and you gain nearly nothing in rebound.

If you need more than an inch think spindle lift if raising the transfer case is the goal or a spacer if not. Or more tire diameter. If you want more travel your going to need custom UCA and LCA to increase the leverage ratio and increase the spring rate to compensate. IMHO of course.

Also how much lift do you have the coils set up at?

I am on 35's with the Kings turned all the way down (least amount of lift).

Joined the club recently. Swapped procomp coilovers for the kings, should've done kings the first time. Night and day difference between the kings and procomps.

Looks great! Thanks for the reply. Looks higher then mine probably because the front bumper is off.

Thanks! Yeah, having no front bumper make it look a lot higher in the front.

How nose high is it? The picture in the parking lot looks alot more level than the profile picture. Same Setup?

    • Yep! This should be a pin somewhere as @pgamboa really dives into all of this. Thanks for reposting the link!
    • I did the new thermostat after doing a 'flip' for a year. Runs as cool one way as the other in the summer but in the winter there is a bit of a floor. Yellow with the new 70 C thermostat. My data over the life of the unit to date. Still need more cooler. Anyway that floor helped both winter fuel economy and shift quality in the winter. I found it a good balance.
    • Evan Williams Bottled in Bond   So pouring the last of a bottle of Evan Williams Black label last night I set off the the state store for a refill only to be denied the by an empty shelf. Rats.    What the did have was a bottle of Evan Williams Bottled in Bond. 100 proof. Hum, a few bucks more but a known distiller. Lets have a swing at it. ( I have before )    Cracked it open and pour a serving over ice. Hum.... more heat, yes. More alcohol naturally. But the barreling not the proof brings the taste and this one came up short.    Oh is was familiar but the heat ran the barrel over like a Peterbilt runs over a squirrel. Could use a heavier toasting of the oak me thinks or perhaps a longer barreling. Who knows. But what I can say is ice or a water back isn't the answer. What kills one kills them both. Sad. It is a pleasant drink....if you have little to compare it to.
    • I've had exactly one set of Bridgestone. Lasted five year and 125,000 miles and had I known better 15oK would have been a cake walk. I would have bought a like set had they not tripled in price since the first set. I removed them at said mileage with 5/32" remaining in dead even wear all four. They were fuel efficient, quite, comfortable and predictable.    Early on I got a very good alignment checked at least once a year, sometimes twice; kept the tires properly inflated, balanced and rotated. And I've found that many a tire issue can be avoided with great maintenance practices. Lot's of tire dealers will do rotation and balance (simple) for free for as long as you own the tire they sold you so no excuse not to.    Bead prep, alloy integrity and stem health have a huge impact on inflation stability. There are more mountings done poorly that perfectly. Finding a good tire guy is gold and as important as finding a tire you like.    That 3X price increase now two sets of "other tires' later is starting look like a bargain.      Bad maintenance kills more tires than bad tires.
    • Atlas, you kill me As aggravating as a project like this can be you have been unable to hide your fascination with learning and using that angst against this beast like a Ninjitsu Master. It amuses you, admit it now.      BTW, love your writing style. 😉
