the first person to get an Edelbrock SC on a 6.2!

So i am headed to torrance CA to be the very first Guinea pig to have an E-Force SC installed on a 6.2L

turns out they were looking for a donor vehicle to test fit the new SC and i stepped up to the plate.

i have a 2014 GMC all terrain in black with the 6.2l and about 5500 miles on the clock.

 

to be honest I'm not sure how i feel about it, they made me too good of a deal to pass up!

it wasn't exactly free but easily 75% off the price of a kit and free installation. ill be without my truck for 4-6 weeks but i am told when i get it back it will have about 150 more HP and TQ than it did when i dropped it off.

 

So i am going to take the family to California for a little vacation hit some amusement parks, visit with some relatives and drop it off at Edelbrock, then fly home 1 way.

 

( i got an unbelievable deal on air fare as well! can you believe $342.00 TOTAL to fly myself, wife and 13 yr old from LAX to DEN 1 way! and only 100 bucks to fly back!!)

 

living at 6500 feet ASL has its disadvantages but that can be fixed pretty easily with forced induction. i am pretty certain based on the numbers I've seen from a stock truck and 150 extra hp should put me into the 13 sec 1/4 mile range (at sea level)

 

anyway I'm pretty excited, and a little apprehensive at the same time. i am getting the full 5 year 100k mile drivetrain warranty they offer so i feel a lot better about that.

i am also excited to know I'm the first person to get the kit and i feel very comfortable having Edelbrock install it.

so stay tuned and ill give everyone an update when i get it back.

I don't know.. seems like you could do a program, intake,etc, for a lot cheaper and faster....if you haven't done it already. You wont get 150 HP.. but a nice bump. And you will likely keep your warranty. Regardless of what they say.. that warranty is toast with a supercharger.

edit - just saw the part about the 100K warranty. I would have then lay out the terms.. who does the work, etc?

I don't know.. seems like you could do a program, intake,etc, for a lot cheaper and faster....if you haven't done it already. You wont get 150 HP.. but a nice bump. And you will likely keep your warranty. Regardless of what they say.. that warranty is toast with a supercharger.

If Edelbrock is like Magnacharger, they supplement the voided GM warranty with their own. Not sure how well it works though.

the warranty is actually pretty good. it only lasts for the remainder of what your GM warranty would have lasted. you can choose 3 different levels up to 20,000 total repair costs.

the one i am getting is the least expensive its 10k for the engine, 2500 for the trans and 1500 for the rear end.

anything goes wrong and you take it to a local gm dealer and the repair bio gets sent to the warranty company. no deductible, done!

yes but definitely not like it does for you in FL.

for example with traction control off and mash the gas at a dead stop you can get a .5 sec chirp from the tires as you take off.

I've heard at sea level you can leave yards of black stripes!

 

heres another for example. I've heard several people with a C6 corvette Z06 can run a 1/4 mile time of 11.7-11.5 on street tires. the best i could manage here was 12.75

 

the fast lane truck TV show tested the 6.2 here in colorado with a g-tech meter and managed something like 7.5-8 sec 0-60 times while someone in south Carolina did the same in 6.0 flat!

 

on average we loose about 25% here so if you have 400 hp there, your going to get about 300 of those ponies here.

 

the ONLY advantage is we tend to get a little better MPG here. i get about 23 highway pretty consistently, 24 if i really work for it. (at 75 mph)

about the only other advantage is it affects everyone the same so if your the guy who bought forced induction for your rig, everyone else is gasping for air like an asthma victim! giving you a distinct advantage.

 

also 91 octane is not as necessary here because even though the compression ratio hasn't changed, we don't get the same cylinder pressure you do and there is less chance of detonation here.

 

on a boosted car, you can actually go with 3psi more boost and expect similar performance as you might get at sea level, we also have a little less wind resistance here at speed.

 

what you really notice is a lack of overall torque engines still rev but they just don't pack the gut wrenching punch of torque. its kind of like how your voice sounds when you exhale with helium from a balloon! its just weak..

Just curious. I'm an old hot rodder and way out of date. In the old days we dropped compression on supercharged engines. Are they lowering compression, changing pistons or are they putting a blower on an engine with 11.5 : 1 compression. How about the camshaft?

I was just thinking about that today. How much better would my truck run mpg and acceleration wise at sea level vice being at 7,200' here in Santa Fe. A SC or turbo kit for the 4.3 would be nice!!!

a very good question and while i am not an engine builder i believe this response to be fairly accurate..

the newer engines are direct injected. this means the fuel is under considerably more pressure and injected into the cylinder all at once just before top dead center.

this has a couple of advantages.

1 since the intake valve is already closed, your adding fuel to an already closed and under compression cylinder, thus your already supercharging to some extent the total volume of air and the now added fuel which is why these engines make so much more torque and hp of their same displacement counter parts. (flex fuel E 85 makes more power see below)

 

2. to some extent your able to minimize detonation because the fuel itself cools the intake charge while under compression. and since your adding fuel at the moment just before it gets lit off you can effectively control the point at which it burns because prior to the fuel being added to the CYL you had nothing to burn yet. (much like a diesel engine)

 

also i believe detonation can be controlled by cylinder head design and a few other tricks built into this engine.

 

on the previous generation of LS engines without DI i believe the compression ratios are lower than the new DI series. but i think we can both agree they are pushing the limits in both cases.

 

i suppose fuel quality these days is more critical than before as well and to that end E85 applications make it possible to push the boost levels even higher due to the lower flash point of e85 and the fact it takes 30% more of the fuel itself (providing more cooling) in an engine designed for it. with flex fuel your adding 30% more fuel to the same cylinder thus making more power. this concept only adds power to a direct injected engine because a multi port FI engine can still only draw in the same quantity of air and fuel on the intake stroke. so you tent to get the same power as 91 on a multiport designed engine verses direct injected running E85 makes more because your able to stuff more total volume into the cylinder by adding the fuel after the intake valve closes.

 

i know someone who took a totally stock yamaha R1 with 12:1 compression and slap a turbo on it, running E85 run a 1/4 mile in just 7 seconds at this altitude with nothing more than a new reprogrammed ECU and a pneumatic shifter tied in. totally stock otherwise!

all i can tell you is your problem is worse than mine! but the good news is if you head south your a lot closer to sea level than me and i highly recommend you plan a road trip to find out.

whenever i plan a road trip that takes me to lower elevations i have a hard time deciding which car to take because like you, I'm curious as well. and i wish for just 1 day the barometric pressure would magically increase by .25 bar so i can enjoy the horsepower i paid for but never got!

uhh, you bought a 4.3? Duuuuude! why the hell would you do that? hate to say this but when i buy i also think about resale value. on the used market in this area i don't think it will be a popular engine choice..

 

i also drive a lexus is 350 and it totally baffles me why anyone here would buy the 250 version making only 200 hp and in the AWD trim. that has got to be the most pathetic performing luxury sport sedan alive at this altitude.

at sea level? maybe! but not here.

 

i didn't even know GM put a 4.3 in a full size truck until i found this site. my old tacoma had the 4.0l v6 and it was actually very adequate. but i put the TRD supercharger on that as well and my 6.2 stock is still faster than my tacoma was!

    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
