Timbrens or Air Bags

You must have installed the Loadlifter 5000 bags (part# 57204).

 

I just went with the Ride Control bags (part# 59565). These bags do not install the same way as the Loadlifters. Looks like Loadlifters mount inside of frame rails while Ride Controls mount outside of rails (did not require removal of jounce bumper).

 

Not sure of differences in each system. Probably weight rating. I've yet to come across a towing or hauling situation the Ride Controls would not handle easily.

 

All the different manufactures are probably producing a decent bag system. After using them for 4+ years, I can't imagine ever having a truck without an air bag set-up.

 

Yep loadlifter 5000 (57204), they mount right were the jounce bumpers are. Like them so far. I have a 2.5" RC leveling kit including the rear 2" block and you do not need spacers for the install.

Have you considered supersprings add a leaf? Looks like it's not as easy to adjust but you are pretty much mx free. Considering these for my max tow package

I have had air bags on my last two trucks and really like how they operate so I didn't consider the extra leaf spring at all. I don't have max tow pkg, mine is a 3.42 rear end.

The pictures don't do it justice as it is hard to see 2" improvement, but it tows nice now and my headlights don't shoot into the sky. I also put a 5.25" drop in the second picture compared to a 3.25 drop in the first.

I had air bags on my previous truck and didn't care for the stiff ride when unloaded vs stock ride. Does anyone have experience with Timbrens? I have a 2" RC leveling kit and my truck has about a 1.5" sag when hooked to my TT. I wonder if the Timbrens would even do much for me here?

I do like the adjustablity of air bags, but they are $$$!

I emailed timbrens before getting the Air Lift product, their rubber jounce bumpers will not eliminate sag at all. They are designed to not alter truck stiffness unless under load. The weight engages the timbren and then it helps stiffen the ride while towing.

 

With your lift I would guess a timbren does nothing for the sag.

I ordered some Air Lift brand helper bags due to the rebate and Summitt Racings reviews on them. I got a 2" spacer as well to make sure the lift doesn't make them not work.

 

Here is the sag I am seeing now.

In the mean time, just move the boat back on the trailer and slide the winch back some to eliminate some of the tongue weight

Just make sure you always have a bit more weight on the front trailer axle than the back (on 2+ axles). Otherwise the tail will wag the dog.

I had the timbrens on my Colordo a few years back. For the 3 times a year I had significant weight in the bed, it was great and did a good job, improved ride under load. For the rest of the time, not so good. Hitting any bumps would slam the timbrens into the frame and then bounce front to back. Mind you, I am not sure if a full sized truck would have the same results as with my 1/4 ton, but I would imagine it would be close. So I see you went with air bags, that is what I would recommend.

Ive got the Timbrens on my max tow 6.2L.

You do indeed still get slam of the timbren over harsh bumps....I'm getting used to it.

They definitely help with the sag of rear end when hooked up to trailer,but do not eliminate it. The rear has to sag over an inch before the Timbren even comes into play.

I tried them mainly because of cost....but ultimately if I keep this truck I think air bags will go on just for the adjustability.

Ditto. I hated the ride with rear timbrens and no load. So i took them off and installed a Add-a-leaf. much better for daily driving. If I was to tow some serious weight, I would lean toward airbags. But my Hellwig springs seem to do a nice job. This is the second truck I have used them on.

So with a 2.5 RC kit with rear blocks, are air bag spacers required?

    • Late reply, but yes—it works on the SLT trim. Compatibility comes down to the plastic shroud shape behind your mirror, not the trim badge itself. On the SLT with auto-dimming, it uses a plug-and-play Y-harness off the mirror/rain sensor power, so no need to run wires down to the OBD port. If anyone's ever unsure about fitment, just drop a photo of your mirror housing and we can double-check it.   Appreciate the detailed feedback on the install! On the windshield glare—we actually took feedback like yours and developed a dedicated CPL (polarizer) filter to cut down dash reflections on sunny days. If you're still running the cam, shoot me a DM. I'd be happy to send a CPL filter over for you to test out—no charge.

    • After I wrote that reply I went for a ride. 85 F out. So trans started at 85 F and it shifted the same as it did an hour latter at 168 F. I've never actually recorded the to cold to shift point but it is under 32 F before they start hanging on to a lower gear or leaving the converter unlocked. Both intended to heat fluid.    Yes, brake or bake. Absolutely.      Your welcome. True research ended decades ago. Field trials are still in play.    There is a thing called oxidation onset temperature. This is the heat related oxidation not the O2 exposure kind. For mineral oil that starts at 140 F. So what happens after 140 F? Each 20 F cuts fluid life in half! Does using a Full Synthetic improve that? Yes! By how much? Depends on the base oil type and a few other factors. But enough to notice. Some esters are even higher. There are even synergies between types the will raise it higher than any one component is alone.    Then there is "Hindered" oils. Antioxidant additives. Hindered Polyol Esters can sit at 500 F for years in a turbine.   When a blender brags his oil will 'take 500 F" in service he doesn't specify for how long. Water will dance on a 500 F hot plate for several seconds. @newdude put up a chart showing the relationship between fluid temperature and it's life in an automatic transmission. Here's a version of that chart for Group III based oils. These temperatures are those in the pan as observed as 'normal'. that is you drive as you do for as long as you do under what load you ask of it and whatever that temperature is this graph applies to. Flash temperatures of a few minutes isn't what his means.    Note that fluids held at a constant 240 F have a service life of only 20K miles. 220 F explains the factory exchange limit, eh? My equipment I keep under 180 F and I'm good if the cooler will hold it as low as 140 F. But that's me.
