6.2 mileages

Hey guys I had another thread asking what engine. After talking to some here and my driving experience this past weekend, I am pretty set on getting the 6.2 but was kind of disappointed in the 3.42 gears and don't quite seem like its got 420hp. course im coming from my dmax with a 120-160hp tune but I am hung up on getting the max tow package with 3.73's or an all terrain with 3.42's.

 

What are yall getting unloaded mileage wise and yall with the max tow package and the 6.2 are you happy you got it, whats your mileage, and did and what difference did you feel test driving a 6.2 with 3.42's vs your max tow???

 

Im also going to level the truck or do a 3" front and 1"-1.5" rear blocks and probably gunna put helper air bags on the rear so either way it wont sink the back end. I want to put probably 1 size bigger tire on dunno what size specifically yet but I would think the 3.73's would help offset that instead of the 3.42's and hurting what I lacked on the test drives with stock 6.2.

I usually average 16-17 of straight city driving. I do make short trips to another area to visit my folks which is a 50-60mph drive on back country hwy. On this I can break the 25mpg barrier almost every time. I've pulled a 3500lb boat/trailer combo about 200 miles with an average of 13mpg. Currently at 16.2 total average on just under 2900 miles.

Last Feb I took delivery of my 6.2L, 4x4, standard bed, crew cab, with the max tow package. I have over 8,600 miles on it now. Here's my experience: highway driving unloaded at about 75 MPH, I usually get 18 - 19 MPG, in town about 15 MPG, and towing my travel trailer (7,000 lbs) at 65 MPH I get an average of 9 MPG. These numbers are CALCULATED! The averages shown on the DIC are usually off by anywhere between 1/2 - 1 MPG, and they are ALWAYS HIGHER than the calculated numbers. I don't know why GM can't or won't make the average MPG shown more accurate - really frustrating.

Avg. 13.3 mpg towing TT (6K) @ about 63mph on interstate. Best non-towing open road is 23 mpg at about 60mph.

6.2 4x4 3.42 Denali best mpg the truck has done was 23mpg on a 543 mile trip used 23.4 gallons. Not bad at all.

Just got back from a trip to San Diego, put about 1000 miles on my Sierra Denali with the 6.2L

 

Please keep in mind I live in Commifornia and we have the strictest emissions in probably the world.

 

Please also keep in mind I was 1 of 4 people in the truck with an estimated payload of 1,000-1,200 lbs (4 bodies plus various suitcases, laptops, coolers, etc)

 

Also, this trip occurred in 100* central valley heat for 62% of the miles

 

Truck is 2WD with Standard Box

 

Used 91 octane entire trip

 

Here are my real world MPGs with my 6.2L (truck is basically brand new, picked up in 2nd week of April, this was first road trip):

I was extremely pleased with the 6.2L getting over 20 MPGs on a trip like this. When you account for the CA emissions restrictions on my truck, the valley heat, the payload, the L.A. traffic and the Grapevine (mountain range separating NorCal and SoCal)..... to get 20.8 MPGs on my return trip is outstanding IMO.

 

I kept the cruise control on 73 MPH on pretty much the entire trip (when I wasn't in traffic).

 

 

So count me as very impressed with these new engines from GM. I NEVER came close to these MPGs in my old 2010 GMC Sierra CCSB with the 5.3L

Question for those with the Denali gauge cluster......

 

Since ours is a digital gas gauge, are you finding the low fuel warning is coming on prematurely?

 

As shown in my post above, I averaged 20.8 MPG coming back from San Diego and the low fuel light came on when I was approximately 10 miles from my house.

 

I searched through the Denali manual, but didn't see anything stating how much fuel is left when the low fuel warning light comes on. I heard someone mention 2 gallons, which at my MPG level, would mean I had nearly 42 miles of range left. When the light first came on, it did state a range of 56 miles, then gradually went down, until it just stated fuel range "low".

 

How it went from 42 mile range to low is beyond me. What is low supposed to mean? 5 miles? 10 miles?

 

So here I am coasting to my driveway thinking I could run out of gas at any second and long story short, I put gas the next day and it only takes 23.XX gallons

 

So that tells me I had 2 gallons and change in my tank. Here I was thinking I would run out.

 

The reason this is such a big deal to me is because I will be making this roundtrip to San Diego quite often in the near future and it is exactly 458 miles door to door for me (and I HATE HATE HATE to stop on road trips, literally will not stop if I'm by myself). Simple math tells us a 26 gallon tank @ at least 20 MPG (which I averaged to and from) should net me a range of 520 miles. Yet as shown above, my trip meter read 465 miles on the return trip with the low fuel level warning triggering and the range stating just "LOW".

 

So am I to believe I still had a range of 55 miles even when the fuel range stated low? Based on the exact math, that's what the range should have been.

Reason being is GM and all other manufactures calculate the MPG off of the injector cycles so there is lots of variance in the fuel mileage.

Considering that my 2007 LTZ 5.3L got around 13 mpg (on a good day), I'm pretty happy with my 2014 6.2L and all the power to boot!!!

I'm getting right at 15 MPG with just over 4,100 miles on the ODO.

It's a free app called Gas Tracker + by Fuelly. I've been using it since April and it's pretty good.
