Gotta get a new starter for the Firebird. $50 for lifetime warranty. The solenoid itself is more expensive..... That's strange.

Anyway, after having to wait several times yesterday ( and a few other days) for it to cool down to start, the solenoid is obviously fried. Always starts the first time of the day, anytime I have trouble its within an hour of parking it hot, on a hot day.

Ah oh.....don't think I can get it out with the headers. I thought it would come out at an angle, but.....

Anyone have a shrink ray I can borrow? Guess I'll just wrap it and live with it if it won't come out, because Don't think I can remove headers without dismantling the steering.

Do you have a mini starter on it?

No, that's the problem. Solenoid looks kinda old, no wonder its having problem hot. Big motor, big exhaust, big starter.

Seriously, whoever put the exhaust must have been happy to remove the system every time he needing to work under the car.

I can't imagine trying to get a full size starter on and off that thing. Damn!

We can't get a full size starter in and out on our camaro or my nova. If we did it would never live.

I just stuck a new MSD starter on mine in may.

Got it, had to back it up under the torque convertor and tilt 45 degrees by the header collectors.

Edit: a full size is 10.5". I do have a mini.

Guess I'm going to overnight one

This look good? They say 502 at 18.0, but surely it can handle a 541 under 11.0

I think this is a re PN'd what I already have:

That is a performance gear reduction starter. It's not very small, but I bet it's smaller than the oreillys starter.

I don't see a "stock" starter living. If you like changing them then it will probably work.

I ordered this.

http://www.jegs.com/i/Powermaster/713/9510/10002/-1?CAWELAID=1710918424&CAGPSPN=pla&catargetid=230006180000848320&cadevice=m&gclid=Cj0KEQjwpvufBRCwzp_zyqfkhrcBEiQA8b-SHEFC_qQ6SW951PuR66AEba5h6VrJbokQZLDrjs_WRiYaAuB78P8HAQ

And the jegs starter heat wrap that has velcro.

Probably stick the old one back on if I'm going somewhere where it will have time cool down.

What really bugs me is I found a BUNCH of threads around the net where people say their starter starting acting up while the car is hot, works fine while its cold, and there is ALWAYS someone nagging them to trace all their battery wires because they claim its jumping the gun saying the starter is bad.

Yeah, because a bad ground would only affect the car when its hot. Some people think too much.

On the Camaro site several guys are thinking that the dyno being at a Honda place hurt, because a guy experienced with American would have been able to troubleshoot on the spot and figure it out from experience. Too bad there aren't any around me.

Ha. I was just mentioning to the wife I hope I have it sorted out one day, she said "I thought you wanted a project car!" I told her I did, but when I bought this I was expecting more car than project!

The plugs had some carbon fouling, I'm blaming that on the retarded timing. I think I'm blaming the rich fuel smell on it also, since I don't remember it being bad this morning after taking the retard to zero. If anyone is interested, I got all my engine spec sheets in a photo album.

And, if you've wondered, when my timing was retarded, my plugs were very carbon fouled(all black, oily).

Ten minutes after removing the retard:

New plugs tomorrow.

Oh, I remember those days with the starter on my '69 Camaro, after installing headers. A fabricated soup can and some heavy woven asbestos were my friend. That was about 37-38 years ago. This was before they invented starter heat wraps, and maybe Velcro?

When I ran my 454s and lots of timing I wired a switch in the dash. I would wheel it over hit the switch. I got tired of blowing the nose off the starter.

Put new spark plugs in. Tested my wires.

Taylor 8.2 thunderbolt spec'd at 40 ohms per foot.

Mine tested:

50~

50~

95~

40~

One read a stable 40~ , I move the probes and it read a stable ,50~ , moved the probes it read a steady 100~. One time it was wildly jumping between 100 and 200 a foot. It was hard to get the stable readings from it.

50~

45~

And the coil wire was a Taylor Spiro pro, 8mm, tested 325 per foot

A can grinder is telling me my problem is a 58% Exhaust to Intake ratio, 10 degree separation at .050. He says I need a minimum 16 degrees, which looks like it will require a custom grind.

OK, straub technologies is telling me $900 for a custom can and springs, and he thinks I'll get around 100 RWHP out of it. He said its an incredible engine with top shelf parts with a half baked cam.

I would dyno it again before you go buying cams. I still don't think cam is your issue. Again, only possibility I see there is if you running a hydraulic cam.
