Bed liner, that's interesting

 

So you'd remove the roof like you're doing a roof TSB, make sure bows are attached, and then spray the entire structure from top and bottom?

I have one that buffets and I've driven numerous rentals, and they all buffeted to some degree. Some as bad as mine, some somewhat less. In fact, mine is slightly less of late, but occasionally really gets going!

 

 

^^^^^^^^^^^^ x2 ! Have been in COUNTLESS 2015 Tahoe's, Suburban's, and Yukon's/XL's as rentals as our TWO 2015 were in the service dept "TRYING" to be corrected. Not most,, but EVERYONE of these rentals have the booming, buffeting, and ,droaning to some degree. I personally have not been in one that DOESN'T make this noise !

Did anyone else hear back from the NHTSA from their complaint? I got an email back today (submitted back in November) indicating that they are contacting GM with my info.

 

Don't know if that means anything, but at least they responded.

 

 

I submitted a complaint on the 2016, haven't heard anything yet from the NHTSA.

 

 

Did get a message from the service manager after Gm early response team contacted him. left a message for me stating..... " I haven't heard of this problem before, and I checked for any service bulletins which there aren't any. I think you are experiencing normal characteristics of this vehicle" Just glad I wasn't talking to this person when I heard this. Probably would have said some I'd later regret.

 

 

My Local dealer that I bought the 1st 2015 Yukon from, AND tried first to buy this 2016 Escalade, but made a big deal about dealer trading for a GMS deal is refusing to take the vehicle in to attempt the repair. Rep from GM early response said its for I didn't buy the truck at their dealership. Well Dan Z, Tell Larry this will INSURE I'll never buy another car or truck from your dealership, And I'll be sure NOT to refer anyone there again as well.

Unrelated question, you've been thru 2 buybacks, right? How did you not feel the issues before you got the '16?

Mine does and so does the 2016 rental I am currently in.

The only place on my truck that moves like this is the lower rear quarter panels, everything else seems to have support or slightly thicker sheet metal. I think the sheet metal and support is the same as your truck but keep in mind my truck was one of the first to roll out at the end of 2013 and GM may have provided more quality control or attention to detail on the first trucks. Lower gas prices and rising sales led GM to increase to 3 shifts and that may have hurt quality control.

I too notice the "soft spot" below the windows on the rear quarters. I suspect that spot might need some attention after the roof.

Are you guys suggesting that the buffeting is caused by sheet metal that is too thin? That would be an epic fail!

I submitted a complaint on the 2016, haven't heard anything yet from the NHTSA.

I've read where 2 other folks have gotten a return notice from NHTSA, maybe a good thing. I made a complaint on another thread and also received a notice from NHTSA today. The press visibility with the GM fullsize SUVs may have caused NHTSA to assign someone to now follow-up.

Well it is safe to say it is not adequately braced for that gauge of metal.

It is damn near impossible for gm not to have pinpointed this issue by now unless they didn't want to.

 

Fixing the problem I can understand but to pinpoint it. Cmon gm

They have - the roof - inputs tickle the roof, that's the long pole in the tent

 

For those that have seen the roof bows, is there room to use something like Fiber Fix to lash around the attach points to prevent the roof from coming unattached - you'd want to leave a little slack

Interested in hearing from those that have been through the buyback process. Were you charged with a usage fee? How many miles on your truck when you returned it, and what were you charged for the usage fee?

I'm guessing that those who have zeroed in on the roof sheet metal being thinner and thereby susceptible to creating a hormonic oscillation at highway speed have nailed the problem. It seems to me that other than re-skinning the roof with thicker metal there's only a few possibilities. One, as someone else suggested, spray the underside with material such as used for spay-in pickup bed liners. Would be very labor intensive and messy if not done with care though. Another, I think it would probably be impractical to space additional bows between present bows but that would probably correct the problem if it could be done. Or, run two rigid supports the length of the underside of roof to put an end to this harmonic oscillation. Of course, all this would have to be affixed to the underside of the roof with some sort of laminate or glue. However, because the problem exhibits itself on a small percent of vehicles there may also be a process control issue at work too.

Appreciate that any structural modifications employed by GM require the vehicle be recertified for crash safety. Dealers cannot therefore make structural modifications unless in the very unlikely changes GM permits it. Obviously if you do it on your own you can do whatever you want.
