Scariest Words from Service Advisor

It's not just GM that has this. A botched update can be catastrophic. When I was at the Hyundai dealer the first-generation Azera was the first US market car with a chipped key. Some lock cylinders had to be swapped and you had to enter like a 30-digit alphanumeric code that shows up on the scan tool like a password (i.e. 1234 looks like ****) to match the key to the control module. I got to do the first one with the understanding that a mishap meant parts being sent from Korea. because the security module only allows one change and has to be pre-matched to the VIN. I got it right but it was nerve-wrecking.

Gm designed modules, tools, servers, software. Don't be so quick to blame dealers.

I'm not blaming the dealer at all. They did a good job for me, but doing my "peek in" update he said it timed out twice - this is what takes so long sometimes. Once they got a good load, it took very little to get it done.

So the truck still is not ready. The Service Advisor was taking the truck to get washed and the seat shifted after replacing clamps again and I had already told him if they didn't fix the seat (3rd time in) he owned me. He called and said they ordered everything but the motors to try to fix the issue. Stuck in the Enclave mine for another few days.

The programming issue is not caused by the tech or the dealer. The peek in display update is done using a usb flash drive and a large data file that comes from GM. This particular download is taking hours in some cases to transfer the file. Sometimes it goes right through, sometimes it times out, sometimes it freezes, if the download freezes or times out, the whole process must be done over, we have even have the clusters freeze up after programming. How would you like to be the service advisor that has to kiss your butt because of something that they have absolutley no control over. GM should develop a better programming process! I understand it is very frustrating for the customer, but it is equally frustrating for the techs, advisors and managers! Most customers are awesome about it... Some not so much! Just keep this in mind when any of you take your vehicle fpr service or recalls. Not directing this at anyone, just saying...

I thought the scariest words by a GM service advisor would be: "NORMAL", and "CANNOT DUPLICATE PROBLEM"
