I'm about to do my first oil change and I can't decide between the mobil 1 advanced fuel economy or royal purple. It's about a $10 difference in 5 quart price. Does anyone know a reason to pay extra for the royal purple

Seems like splitting hairs to me. My decision making process:

1. Is it Dexos approved? Go to 2.

2. Is i the right viscosity? Buy the oil.

Seriously - i the cheaper one is approved for your vehicle and upholds the warranty, WHY would you pay more?

I'd say on a V8 truck any of the top brand synthetic oils off the shelf will be just fine. I'd be more picky on a motor with a turbo or supercharger.

VW is very strict on what oil you use. Though the SOB is still burning oil and these Brits keep telling me to monitor it.... Been 4k miles and it's at bottom of stick, again. ....

My neighbor owns a fairly large service center. He told me one day that royal purple is good for "race cars" but wouldn't use it in my truck. He suggested Mobil 1. I was working in the yard so I just said, K. Typically I would ask for an explanation. I've used both over the years and since it used to be cheaper I settled on Mobil 1. Now they cost about the same.

No disrespect to your neighbor; but as long as it's the right type and approval specs, Royal Purple is fine. I'm not sure if it's dexos approved for GM applications, though.

Have you used up your "complimentary" free oil changes, or would you rather just change it yourself?

I was going to start using Mobil 1 when my 2 years ran out, but now I see that Pennzoil Platinum is Dexos approved, I may stick with Pennzoil products as I have always used in my engines of all sizes and uses.

I had a 99 ford that burned a quart every 2500 miles, Ford dealer said normal. At 20,000 miles I put a Vortec on it, at 110K I traded it in still a quart every 2500 miles. I have a 92 GMC with a 383 with a whipple S/C, a quart every 500 miles, 4 years later and 7000 miles still going strong no plugs no smoke, and goes like hell.

Im thinking about testing royal purple in mine.

Here is why:

My wife drove a 2001 Toyota Celica to and from work 5 days a week. 115 miles one way.

She was about 250 miles per day on her car. Most of her pay check went to to gas and
oil changes.

I switched her to royal purple because my local parts store practically begged me to try it.

She was at 29 miles to the gallon, got to 33 miles to gallon when the oil was fresh and 31 to 32
after about 5000 miles. We changed the oil about every 7000 miles.

Im not kidding... she gained 4 miles to the gallon on royal purple.

I did not see any improvement in millage on my 2010 Silverado.

The same part store says a guy replaced all fluids in a dodge diesel.

All of them, rear end, tranny, power steering, everything. He was able to

gain 3 miles per gallon on the large dodge diesel.

Like I said it did not work on my 2010 Silverado. So, I doubt it will work

on my 2015 but I will try it. Takes about 3 oil changes to get the max
millage. On the Toyota we kept seeing an increase each time we filled up.

I have told 2 people with commuter cars to try it and both of them saw millage gains.

Enough to pay for the cost of the oil.

I have no idea if it is better for the engine. In my wife's car gas was $500 a month.

We needed every increase we could get.

everyone has their own preference as to what oil's best, I prefer Mobile 1. I've seen under hood stickers on both Mercedes Benz and Corvettes specifying Mobile 1, they helped make my choice.
