The light may be on, but it doesn't mean the AC is running. Read your owners manual. It is described in there. The defrost system uses the air conditioning condenser to remove humidity (to clear windows), so it will run, but ONLY if the outside temp is above freezing. But the light will stay on regardless when you are on AUTO.

thanks make sense.About the air circulation buttons since i dont have rear defrost i have this extra button with a picture of a car that has a straight arrow coming from the outside thru the dash of the car.In the owners manual i cant find anything about that button.I do have the recirculation button with the curved arrow.

That's the opposite of recirc. That means the dash vents are open and it pulls fresh outside air (through the cabin filter) into the cab.

Thanks and Happpy New Year another question i have is why cant i turn off the outside air i can turn it on,there is nothing in my owners manual about that feature it has something about the recirculation but nothing about the outside air feature. For dusty roads and stinky skunk road kill you would think it can be turned off. When the fan is on i can switch from recirculation to outside air but when i turn the fan off the outside air stays on and i cant turn it off.Its my first new truck and im still trying to understand these features.

There have been numerous comments (too many to count actually) regarding the "recirc air feature" on these vehicles not blocking 100% of the exhaust fumes/diesel stink/skunk stank/etc. And I have experienced that in my new GMC truck as well. So what we have here are vehicles that in reality do NOT block 100% of the air coming into the cabin even when you as the operator instruct the vehicle to recirculate the cabin air. I have never seen or experiencec anything quite like it in all the vehicles I have owned. My only guess as to the reasoning behind this is the engineering team decided to take this decision out of your hands as owner and operator because windows do/will fog up when 100% of the outside air is blocked. Therefore, my only conclusion is this was done as "Litigation mitigation" so people can't sue GM for fogged up windows in an accident. I am open to any corrections on my hypothesis. Happy New Year's Eve everyone!
