Installed Borla/GM cat-back Exhaust System

Russ.......how does your system sound. Do you have any V4 sound issues or droning? Looks pretty much like the GM Borla system except for the pipe sizes, where yours seem to be a little larger diameter. Mostly are you happy with it, after all, that's all that counts?

So far I am happy. I plan to update the pinned exhaust thread after a bit, I posted a couple videos there. I just ran 3 tanks of gas through to check MPG, make sure I didn't F that up. Now I am running it with the valve open to compare sound and again MPG. Defiantly more drone/helicopter sound with it open, especially when cold. My commute has some slight incline as to where I am in V4 but under some load, that's where I notice the benefit of the valve the most.

I have a tune so I may try valve open and V8 only, check mpg and then decide what to keep.

I am concerned a little about that bypass size. May try changing that if it's easy. Cost about $30 to add it, I got the 3in valve for free.

Good Luck Russ......I hope you find the right combination. I know my GM Borla system works great. Absolutely no drone at any speed, and just a very very slight "Helicopter" V4 sound at certain RPM's. I know what I'm listening for with the V4 thing as I has a 2007, with the same issues, but if you really don't know what you are listening for, you wouldn't even notice it. It's almost imperceptible.

I wonder if it makes any difference that the GM Borla adaptive valve is before the muffler, where as yours is in the "stock" position directly behind the muffler. Who knows, there are just so many potential areas where adjustments can be made, and you really don't know if it will have any effect on the overall end result.

No drone with my setup either and the slight helicopter I would say I have that as well. Sometimes at around 1700 RPM I can hear it with the radio off. I thought maybe the GM Borla didn't have that.

Yes I have it, but as I said, unless you knew what you were listening for, you wouldn't even notice it, I just know it's there because of my last truck, a 2007 Silverado, where I had a Magnaflow muffler, and the V4 transition sound was very pronounced. It must be that valve that is helping control the unwanted sound issues.

Guy's to be clear....if I want no drone do I go with the GM/BORLA? Or is it the same as the one I buy from Borla.com. I'm trying to decide between the GM/Borla or the Borla I can buy from Borla. The non GM Borla is a few hundred cheaper.

To be clear...buy the GM/BORLA if you do NOT want drone.

Does anybody have the Borla sport cat back non gm? And is it possible to get the valve put it if there is a drone? I have a 14" magna flow cat back on my 2008 chevy and there was a pretty loud drone in v4. I want to get away from that but would really like the borla sport and my understanding is the gm borla doesn't have that option. What do you guys think?

Definitely get the GM Borla. There was a thread somewhere here where someone had installed the regular "Borla" system, and he actually called Borla because of the drone and I assume the "Helicopter" sound. Someone also tried to order only the Borla headpipe which has the adaptive valve in it, and Borla wouldn't/couldn't sell it to him, as apparently it was a GM part, and could not be sold individually.

I don't know what the end result would be by adding the valve to a regular Borla system, but unless uou have the valve and the ability toe weld it in, by the time you pay someone to do it, you probably will pretty much eat up the $200 savings. I know there was a fellow doing exactly this, but I have not seen him post any results of the final outcome.

I have the GM/BORLA and I have zero drone. It is slightly louder than stock, but has a nice non obnoxious growl. It is comparable to the Hemi Ram exhaust. It sounds Fking awesome in other words! I am very happy with it.

I am still testing it out. Just ran my first tank of gas with the flapper valve stuck open to check MPG. Got 1MPG better on this tank and I am liking the sound which I thought I wouldn't. I think the bypass they put on is too big, too much flow is going that route, which isn't the most efficient. So still trying to decide if I try a smaller bypass, if the 1MPG better was just a fluke, or if I just leave the valve open.

Exactly my feelings "Chief Bob".

Does this system allow you to go back to stock if wanted or do you have to hack up the pipes

I had this installed today. You do not need to cut the original system off, but some shops will because they think its faster.

The newest version of this exhaust, does not use the bypass pipe only a valve inline in the exhaust. Just installed it today.

    • Missing pieces of the Assembly   Detergency vs Solvency   Not the same thing. Detergency is the mechanism that surrounds solid particulates preventing amalgamation. Usually accompanied by a Dispersant whose job it is to keep those encapsulated particles in Suspension. Solvency keeps things that can be dissolved in solution.    Salt is a solid that can be dissolved. Pepper is a solid that cannot be dissolved. A detergent/dispersant is effective on pepper but a solvent is more effective on salt. As long as the solids remain in either state, dissolved or dispersed then they can be be removed with the oil upon change.    How many wranglers does it take to herd cats? Depends on how many cats your herding. How much sponge does it take to soak up water? How much water is there to soak up? Point is most oil blends start with some herding ability and next to zero sponge and recently even fewer wranglers are being sent to do the same job.    So you start with a dozen cowboys and zero cows but at the drive progresses you pick up cows along the way, but not cowboys. At some point you have more cows that the wranglers can handle and some leave the herd. Deposits. And the API has an acceptable number of cows they are willing to let loose. In the ideal world zero is the right number for he rancher but to the butcher....a few lost is fine. This cow is beat to death. Let's move on....   Solvency isn't something oils on the Walmart shelf care about AT ALL. Problem is, you motor does. Fuels driven varnish sticks rings and only a solvent can keep them in check. The bet is that the solids driven portion that plug the expander rings and the oil drain backs and VVT screens and AFM screens will be an issue long before varnish is. Not that it wont be but if they market well enough the consumer can be kept ignorant enough to either believe it is "normal" (A quart in 1 or 2K is normal) OR is kept at bay longer than the first owner is likely to hang on to the unit. Solvency cost money.    Now the OEM's have John Q. Public buffaloed into the belief that the number cows accumulated along the trail is a known and predictable CONSTANT. It isn't. Nor is the rate at which they crossed paths with them. Only the number of wrangles is constant. Or was. Each new generation of oil sees fewer and fewer of them.    So what happens when the number of cowboys is lower (lower TBN) with each seasons trail but the trial is longer (OCI) and the number of cows along that trail continues increase? (Conditions that promote deposits).    For awhile the blenders were on to something. Better bases are harder to degrade (fewer cows) but that was overtaken by a longer trail (OCI) and improved breeding (More cows) while continuing to reduce the cowboy staffing levels (TBN/Aniline #).    Marketing has been successful. We've fired most of the staff, cows breed line bunnies, the trail is ten times longer and we've convinced the boss his ranch is in better shape that it ever was.    That kids is just the cleaning side. The side few pay attention to.

    • Looking for this part for my truck. They don't sell just that one piece and to get it you have to pay over $100 even used for the whole air tube. The piece the hose clamp snaps into that is held on by the screw and nut. If anyone has access to one please let me know.
