Locking or Limited Slip Rear setup?

Recommended Posts

Just curious about the differences the option sheet looks like you can check one or the other the Z71 would be taken off road once in a while having to deal with muddy slopes because of the mountain terrain that I vacation around.

Which rear setup would you get and why?

Thanks!!

they offer a limited slip?  The only one i know they offer is the regular rear end and the G80 which is the locking rear diff.

Ok here we go I just answered my own question, dang.

G86 Locking REar requires NYS..

NYS=Quadrasteer

Is a locker better than a limited sliP? Because with the $2500 credit for quadrasteer if a locker is better id rather get that...

thanks/

From what I have read, the G80 option fully locks the rear-end up to 18mph.  After that it functions as a limited slip.  Personally, I would never get a 4x4 with an open diff, especially if you are going to be driving in some slop.

BTW, you can't go wrong with a Z71 and Z28-SS combo...

The G80 isnt even worth it IMO.  Its a limited slip above 15 or 20mph and has a tendancy to xplode with enough use.

The Auburn Pro Series Diff i have has worked much better than my G80 ever did!

If you 'wheel enough, you might want to look into a Detroit for your rearend.  That's what I plan on getting soon.  They'll run you around $400 and is a full-time locker.  Disadvantages are when turning on pavement, your inner tire won't give anymore and this leads to faster tire wear, but it's not really noticeable.  When I take the Jeep out and turn sharply, it screetches like I'm peeling a wheel and everyone always looks over and is like what the #### - that Jeeps got big tires and it can squeal like that!!!

I think you might have had that backwards. The limited slip is ONLY available with quadrasteer. The locking dif is only available without quadrasteer.

You could always install the E Locker and lock that diff up when ever you felt like it.  E locker comes standard on the H2. Just flip a switch and the rear locks up. Kind of like the Air locker but is done with electronics, magnets. :thumb:

I have a Quadrasteer truck with the limited slip. It's actually a whole different and much heavier duty rear end, a Dana 60 (I think) as opposed to a corporate 10 bolt. As far as the diff is concerned, the limited slip is of limited use (no pun intended). I have had a truck with the G80 and it is more effective than the G86.

The G80 rear is great for the average 4x4 use. If you plan to do a lot of hard off road activity, you may want to look into a better locker. The G80 can not take a lot of pressure. Mine exploded in the '89 one morning when it locked up on pavement. I put a Auburn limited slip unit in it's place. Boy was that a mistake. What a piece of crap. If you do not have close to even weight on both back tires it will only spin one. It's great for hole shots on pavement but, that's about it.  :flag:

Thats definitely the first i have heard of an Auburn having problems.  I know quite a few people with Auburns, including myself, that have heard only praise from them.

In fact, my Auburn locks up very easily.

If you jack one wheel off the ground in the back will it pull off the jack or spin that one wheel off the ground. The G80 locker would lock and pull off the jack. The Auburn unit I have will not. It will just spin that one wheel. I had it replaced under warranty and the new one does the same. I'm sure they have different types. Mine is just the plain limited slip unit and it should be called limited traction instead of limited slip.
