What Oil and Oil Change Interval for Your K2?

Recommended Posts

since I'm a low mileage driver, its every 3,000 miles irrespective of what the odometer reads or the owner's manual recommends and at least once per year.

Change intervals will depend on crankcase capacity as well as what kind of oil you use, small engines with 4 quarts of oil will need a change before a v8 sporting 8 plus quarts in the pan. Your manual will tell you when service is due, as a rule of thumb I change at every 5-6000 miles even when my OLM says 50 percent. Of course everyone has their own opinion and after all it is your truck so treat it like you want.,

In my last 2 trucks I went 5500-6000 miles using Mobil1 and AC Delco filters which was about 30% left on life meter. The oil level was only down about 1/2 quart so will stick with that. I will start doing that after my 4 free ones.

You might reconsider that filter, based on what the crowd is saying on Bobistheoilguy.com

The Wix or Champ or relabled (Mobil, K&N, NAPA Gold, etc.) are the ones that seem to have the most consistent following on BITOG. They get pretty deep over there.

I stand corrected. The reviews on the Ultra are very good.

Yes I hang out at BITOG also and the Fram Ultra's appear to be growing in popularity. They offer excellent filtration with synthetic media and appear to be solidly built. I took one apart few months ago: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/3534172/Cut_open:_Used_Fram_Ultra_XG10#Post3534172

I also cut open an ACDelco PF63. It also appeared to be well built: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/3433874/Cut_open:_ACDelco_PF63_with_6,#Post3433874

Quite a few Purolator filters have shown up on BITOG in the last year or so with tearing issues. That would be the one filter brand I would stay away from (at least until Purolator fixes the problem).

Funny, I had just read those two posts on BITOG a day or two ago and didn't put you together with those threads. LOL.emoticon_yield.gif

The fact is; I just bought a few old style PF63 filters based on your post over there.

What data did you use to come to this conclusion?

So I have a car so I don't drive the truck as much as I would. So I bought the truck in Feb '14 and I only have 7200 miles on it. I have 4 free oil changes in the first 2 years. So my first oil change was at 2K. I told in the past, to always replace the oil at the first 2K mark just to get any debris out as the engine breaks in. I replaced the oil again 4K miles later. Since I do so little miles on my truck and I have 1 year left and 2 free oil changes. I am thinking of doing one more oil change in August/Sept and then the last one in February. After that, I will do my own oil changes, but I am not sure at what interval I will use or oil I will use. But i am reading your posts and getting a clue.

This is why engines have oil filters.

Yes a larger crankcase capacity can help with extended OCI's but it depends on the motor and the operators driving habits. Engines that are short tripped consistently (without getting out on the highway often) don't get the oil up to full temp. This can issues with high fuel dilution in the oil (which can result in lowered viscosity).

I used to have a 2005 Honda Accord with a 2.4L 4 cylinder. It held 4.5 quarts of oil with filter. Honda's recommend service interval for normal driving was an oil change every 10,000 miles (or 1 year..which ever came first). This was with conventional 5W-20. That motor was real easy on oil.

I don't trust the OLM thing on the truck neither did I on my Cruze. I do 5000 and use Pennzoil Platinum with a Mobil 1 filter. I'm about to do the change over to Amsoil on my car first and then the truck too.

GM probably spent millions to develop and refine the OLM. It is as valid as any manual that has a list with a recommended oil change interval. If you don't trust this computerized program, why would you trust EFI, Anti-skid, BCM, etc., or any other program in the truck?

I use Mobil 1 with an AC Delco filter. I do not know all the specifics that go into oil's however I am sure GM has done at least some research in oils and what oils run better in their motors. GM puts Mobil 1 oil and AC Delco filters on their 100k Corvettes so I figure it should be good in my truck. Also I have seen cut outs of different oil filters one being an AC Delco and the inside of the filter had more layers than all the others but the worst one appeared to be Fram so I tend to stay away from them, albeit that was in a GM Certified Technician class that a friend of mine was taking and I was just their visiting.

    • I agree, simplicity and reliability matter more as vehicles get more complicated. A V8 work truck option with fewer electronic features and a stronger warranty would definitely appeal to a lot of buyers who use their trucks for real work. Customizing it with trusted outfitters is often the best way to get exactly what you need.webcrimsNY
    • I’ve heard similar complaints from newer vehicles where the factory “premium” systems don’t always live up to expectations. A good installer should be able to improve the sound without turning it into a bass-heavy setup. I’d look into upgrading the front speakers, adding a quality DSP amplifier, and possibly improving sound deadening first—those changes usually make a much bigger difference than just adding a subwoofer. Hopefully someone local can recommend a reputable installer in the Las Vegas/St. George area.
    • Do you remember that Harley Davidson was more successful (solvent) when it produced about 60% of the market demand (by design) and forced wait times of up to three years? Even when your turn came around it was, "Take what we are giving you or move to the back of the line and start over". HUGE markup's were 'normalized' and dealer killed. 40% markup and no floor plan? What's not to love? Greed will kill them yet. They have surplus production and customer base is tanking. And still they think nosebleed pricing will work.
    • The engine was done as part of the 6.2 recall?   You'd have to see if your VIN also has the 6.2 engine special coverage on it.  Coverage number is N252494003.  If you have this, your engine is covered under this and NOT the GM replacement part engine warranty which is 3yr/100k from the date of install.  The 3yr/100k mi warranty is in effect for non warranty purchases.     This is not any different if it was replaced under warranty without a recall or special coverage.  So if you had a 5.3 and it popped at 3 years in at 50,000mi during the 5yr/60k powertrain, the replacement engine would not get the 3yr/100k, and instead gets the remainder of the 5yr/60k as coverage.     So N252494003 gives 10 years or 150,000mi of coverage, which ever comes first, starting at the vehicle in service date.  So if your in service date is 01/01/2022, N252494003 gives you special coverage of the engine until 01/01/2032 or 150,000mi, whichever comes first.  So if your start date was 01/01/2022, you'd have left 5 years and 4 months (lets round to august 1st), or 62,000mi left of coverage.   So you need to know your in service date to know how much coverage is left.
    • Okiee dokie there bud, way to take things to the extreme.   I guess you missed the whole point and take things way to serious. I installed different EV6 style injectors that just so happen to be larger in my car running the same LQ4 engine and with a better spray pattern than the stock style injectors and I noticed no difference in the idle quality. Kinda was my round about way of saying that even if you put the same size but better style injectors in your truck, you will likely see the same thing.    I'm sure you're great to have conversations with in person if that's how you act through a keyboard. One little things sets you off and now I guess my dick is all up in your face.
