Took her to New England Dragway tonight

So I have been wanting to get a baseline for my truck since I bought it. I knew it felt like a 15/16 second truck, but tonight proved me right. I was also lucky 13 for the evening.

Here is the 5 runs I made tonight.

So the 4400 lb V6 truck was off to a slow start. I started off without doing anything other than mash the gas on the last yellow light. Because of drive by wire technology, I had a dismal 1.107 R/T. followed by a 16.087@ 86.96 mph.

The next run was with the tow haul mode on, and traction control left on. I started feeling how high I could climb the revs at the light, and my R/T dropped to a .623, and my 1/4 mile was still seemed slow at 16.057@ 86.43 mph.

So my third run I figured the traction control was pulling to much timing, so I shut it off as well. I launched at 2500 rpm, and my R/T dropped to a .441 with a 15.853@ 86.82 mph.

the 4th run was my best, but not my best R/T. The again the tow haul was on, and the traction control was off. My R/T dropped to a .331 with a best of the night 15.699@ 87.5 mph.

My 5th and final run was why I do not like the right lane. My R/T was a .251, but I over revved it, and spun more than I had planned too. So my final of the night was a 15.924@ 87.12.

All in all not bad for a bone stock V6 that does not even have so much as a drop in performance filter. The drivetrain is as it was when it left the factory.

For a daily driver, most of us think about it. But you were thinking out loud on this night :)

Pretty good performance for a stocker V6.

I don't think my CC 5.3L with the camper and gun drawers and all the other stuff on it would do any better, maybe not as good.

Good times for that six banger! I will try to get out there and post up what the 5.3 can do

Very impressive. Being 2wd and rcsb also saves alot of weight, you probably can do better than us guys with ec/cc 4wd and V8's.

Impressive for the V6 - those are about what I would expect from a 5.3 truck. My old 2002 Z71 extended cab with the 5.3 was around that range IIRC (it's been 12-13 years so memory is a little fuzzy...)

And FYI - your R/T has 0 to do with your times. You can sit there all night, it won't impact it your ET so don't focus on it. The clocks start when you roll forward and break the beam - not when the light turns green.

Oh no. You don't understand.Your time does not start when you start to move, it starts as soon as the green light illuminates. It affects it in a big way. The sooner you can get off the line without redlighting, the faster you can get your speed. I have been drag racing for close to 30 years, and I have lost with a faster car because I did not cut a good light.

No. Absolutely incorrect with regards to ET.

The only place RT is important "in a race" is in bracket racing. It has zero impact on ET. Clocks don't start until you roll forward far enough to break the first beam.

In bracket racing it matters because the point there is to both run your dial AND get to the finish line first.

Congrats! That's impressive! My 91 Camaro RS V8 5spd with a few mods could only trip 15fifties. Once I added gears it dropped to 15flat. It was a pathetic economy V8 is all it was. Still fun to drive. Got 30.5mpg once from Memphis to Baton Rouge. Currently 4 seconds faster in current shape! LOL Anyways... I'm sure you will be able to click off some better times with mods and weather. Post up when you do!

Correct! You could sit at a green light all day but as soon as you move from the beams the ET starts counting! I've done it numerous times trying to figure out launches.

Funny. Here at NED, the clock starts when the green light illuminates. Always has. I assume this is every track, but I could be wrong.I have seen 12 sec cars run 13 sec because the driver was day dreaming at the light.

30 years of racing? Lol. Good one!

I almost feel like I am missing something, and based on your screen name, it sounds like you have some knowledge I may have missed. I once destroyed 5.0 mustangs with my 87 Omni GLHS. My understanding is that when the light turns green, the time starts

The time starts when you break the beam at the drag strip.

The difference in time when the light turns green and you break the beam is your reaction time.

I have drag raced sport bikes and my 370Z over the last eight years and was pretty good at it. I ran low 10's with the bikes and low 13's with my Z.

My GMC is certainly nothing like the Z or a sport bike but I am curious to see what my 5.3 crew will do out there. :driving:

You're definitely missing something. But don't take our word for it. Next time you're out there, wait for the light to turn green, sit there for 3 seconds, THEN launch and run the pass as you normally would. Bet you won't be a 19+ second pass.

87 Omni GLHS? You mean 86... or 87 Charger GLHS? At any rate, awesome fun cars way back in the day. Back when running low 13s was considered "quick" :) Too bad mine never held together for very long. Great cars when running though!

I have seen 12 second cars run mid 14s too... usually because the driver didn't know how to get the power down. It has nothing to do with R/T.
