nope didnt say why it happened. Not sure how often it goes into v4 mode. A gm rep came out tuesday and rode with me. Said hes gonna put a set of new michelins on it and it should tAke care of 80% of my problem. I said what about the other 20%. He told me its the characteristic of the truck. I said ur kidding me right?!.... Anyways ill see how it rides with the new tires. Still gotta get them to fix the vibration on hard accell from a dead stop. They said that was Normal too.. ****ing gm... Excuse my language.. Im just fed up with them insulting my intelligence..

No worries friend. I know how frustrating that kind of stuff can be. I had an issue with 2 - 2014 honda crv's I had before the silverado. One was a replacement for the first. Both had the same internal engine issue (cold start vtc rattle, horrible) and Honda's response was "there's no fix"

So at least gm is trying to make things right. My 15 silverado has some issues but nothing like the internal metal on metal vtc rattle so I'm trying not to worry about them too much. It's a great truck overall. I have some very slight vibes between 35-45mph when I'm coasting. But not bad enough to make an issue out of. Also have the seat bottom movement issue starting at 2100 miles so that's not very good.

Unfortunately, across the board, even with the Japanese, quality issues persist. Its unfortunate considering what the sticker price of these trucks are. But I'm still very happy overall and dont miss the crv at ALL! lol.

Hey Y'all,

I've been enjoying my 2015 Silverado Crew Cab Z71 5.3 L since I bought it 2 months ago. Nearly 1300 miles so far, no vibrations or any other issues. I'm very happy with it so far. It's not 100% perfect, but it's been good so far.

My brother told me yesterday that when he started his after sitting for 4 days, he thought he heard something click when he was craking it, then it was hammering when it started. He drove it for a short while, took the trailer he was towing back home, disconnected it (took the truck out of tow/haul mode) and then he said he thinks when it went to V4 mode is when the noise stopped. He has 28K miles on it and it's been flawless until this occured. He said the sound was similar to a 5.3 video with a collapsed lifter I sent him, but he said it was louder than that.

Its been quiet ever since and his dealer told him he's not aware of any issues with the new 5.3 in the 2014+ trucks with engine issues ((that I have read about in the prior generation 5.3, AFM issues, lifter collapses, oil consuption due to piston ring issues in the cylinders that deactivate.

Since that time it's been quiet.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this issue as to what happened or what caused this? Oil level is good and it's been regularly maintained by the dealer. Seems like a stuck lifter, possibly due to the AFM? has anyone heard of any engine issues or AFM issues on the new 5.3's?

When my 5yr/100K mile warranty is out I plan on installing a tune that perminetly deactivates the AFM so she runs in V8 mode all the time just to be safe.

Eventhough I have the chevy 2 yr maintenance included, I plan on doing my own service so I can use a good Full Syn oil, such as Valvoline and a high quality oil filter (WixXP) My brother had his truck way overfull one time by the dealer who serviced it, I think he said he saw oil coming out the valve cover or dipstick tube, I can't remeber which but it was overfiled. I have the ability to do my own work and just have better peace of mind knowing it's done right if I do it myself.

Any thoughts or help would be apprecaited as he's not sure what to do at this point since it's been quiet since the day it had the issue. He did talk to his dealer who told him if it does it again to bring it in and they will take a look at it for him.

Thanks,

Greg

I still think this V4 issue is weird since I haven't read anything else like it. Really sounds like a lifter was stuck to me. The truck does not start in V4 mode and doesn't change until cruising - at idle or stopped it is in V8 mode. You can drive at slow speed and let off the gas to see the transition. Mine always transitioned around 35 - 45 around town on level roads as an example. If it is in V4 when accelerating, something is wrong. I used the Range device for a while and recently just turned AFM off with a Diablo tuner.

I did want to comment about the overfill of oil...I too changed to Mobile 1 full synthetic at my last oil change. I use an oil change shop where I know the owner to do my annual oil change and inspection on my 2001 T/A and 2004 GTO and decided to use them to do my truck on the same annual inspection / oil change schedule (all are low mileage @ 5,000 miles per year). Anyway, I go to Wally World for the oil and acquire AC Delco filters online.

The point of the story...The shop still thought the truck should have 8.5 quarts but I only supplied 8 quarts - I find that a lot of folks still think it should be 8.5 even though GM sent a bulletin to lower it to 8. Although all dealers should know this, I have read where there have been issues with overfill. I always check the dip stick after an oil change just to be sure (if I don't do it myself).

And before anyone says anything, yes, I know its cheaper to do the change myself, but having the shop change the oil with my product while they are doing the inspection saves me time and I don't have to clean up or dispose of anything.

Hi Chuck, I may have given some mis-information so I apologize. I believe what happened, according to my brother is his truck made a strange noise when he was cranking it, when it fired, it was hammering loudly. He said he had to go on an errand so he had to take his truck, he throught the entire engine was going to blow....and when it switched from V8 to V4 mode when he got to the bottom of the street, the hammering stopped and has not come back (or happened again) since.

It's just very strange. He told me recently he feels my truck is much quiter than his at idle, that my DI noice is quiter and the engine overall is quiter, so I don't know if he now has excessive play in some of the lifters/pushrods from what happened or not. I told him he should take an oil sample at next oil change and have an analysis done to see if there's a lot of metal in the oil or not. I believe those sevices can even tell you where the metal in the sample came from inside the engine, unless I'm thinking of something else!

Thanks again.

insulting our intelligence is what they have been doing since the afm bullsh?t!!! i am done with them i have a 2013 sierra and i bought an extended warranty and never used it and i'll be dammed if 5000 miles out of warranty a lifter failed and they want to install a new engine ($8800.00) for a damn lifter and possibly a cam!!!!! they told me they would take off $2600.00 since it just went out of warranty and i had recently lost my job of fifteen years and i have been struggling to pay for the truck ever since just hoping the truck would last until it was paid for and now this....i am just sick about it that they will not stand behind a known problem that has cost customers together millions of dollars after they pay the high prices for these junkers!!!!

Wow that's terrible to hear. Did they tell you what the cause was? Do you run in v4 mode much?

Tires had nothing to do with the failed lifyers right?

    • I think the answer is it's a stock 5.7 Hemi with a 3.0L blower bolted onto it 😉   Practically, because a blower introduces a lot of high pressure, severe thermal stress, and extreme mechanical loads on an engine. Things still need a little time to seat and get used to moving under load.   Sarcastically, because it's a Stellantis/ 5.7 Hemi and those things need all the help they can get!!
    • It's been a little over three weeks since my second knee replacement.  I can now walk around the house without a walker or cane but still have a lot of healing ahead.  This morning I was able to bring a cup of coffee to my wife in bed.  A few days ago, this coffee would have ended up on the kitchen floor!  Knee replacement surgery is very common and will typically enhance the recipient's future quality of life. However, the recovery process can present significant challenges, pain and discomfort. I encourage anyone facing a recommended total knee replacement to welcome the opportunity.  Just be aware that your body may take several months to fully welcome the new parts!
    • The Germans basically didn't make the list. There aren't a lot of shade-tree mechanics who work on them in general. At some point the economic equation of keeping a car alive favors junking it. Anecdote/experience tells me this is the case versus actual bad engines/engineering. Not that there isn't any, but there are definitely notable excellent examples. The 2.0 diesels will go forever and ever if one keeps the car around it running. The 2.0 gas cars eventually wear out their turbos but the block below it is usually still solid as a rock. BMW inline 6's same thing. Mercedes diesels of yesteryear, not uncommon to see 250k out of those engines, easy.     Link to the synopsis of the study: https://www.iseecars.com/longest-lasting-cars-study
    • 0w20 is recommended in the Sequoia. 0w16 in the Highlander Hybrid.   I think you make a compelling case for both the quality and frequency of maintenance but I wouldn't go so far as to plot a linear relationship between longevity and oil weight 😉   The list is interesting and leaves me with some questions. The Silverado 1500 is 12.9% likely while the GMC Sierra 1500 is only 10.8% likely. Arguably, they're the same truck, so other factors must be influencing the outcome.   The Honda Odyssey ranks #12 at 13% likely. Great. Rest assured we'll never stop hearing about the dang thing LOL.   There's a bit of a spread between the 4Runner (32.9%) and Tacoma (25.3%). Both overlap on the same 4.0 for many years although the Tacoma used a 3.5 for the last 10-12ish. I wonder if that's related to use-case or if it's suggesting the 3.5 isn't quite as up to the task, or maybe something else fails mechanically.   Ram at 3.5% overall likely, but the Ram 3500 holds the top spot on the Heavy Duty Models at 39.7%. One might say the Cummins is a ringer and provides an unfair advantage. I don't think it's fair/accurate to pit the GM Fullsize 1500's in a list with HD's which are basically medium-duty wearing a 3500 badge.   The Tahoe and Suburban hold spots #15 and #8, respectively, on the longest lasting SUV's list. What's the difference? One's got a shorter butt, unless they're also counting the 2500/3500 Suburbans in those numbers.   The GMC Canyon gets a 1.4% increase over its twin brother Colorado. Why, because it's prettier?   SO many questions...
    • Have the aftermarket system removed an re-test.  Its pretty much the only way to know if there is still an issue that is the truck and not from that.
