Need quick answer...will it blend...er...tow

So wife and I ate looking at two trailers. A 30ft @ 6800 dry. And a 35ft 7900 dry.

 

Truck is rated 9600. Wife likes the larger of course. Am I biting off more then I can chew with the larger one even with a good trailer brake and WD hitch?

 

Or am I over thinking things?

Mine is a 32 foot 8300 loaded trailer.....although I was within my 9600 lbs tow rating, I was crushing my 1600lbs payload once I loaded the truck and added the tongue weight. ....get a 2500.....it made a world of difference for me

So it has a 790 hitch weight. Add 150 for propane & battery. So that leaves roughly 550 for people, and other stuff right?

 

I should add, getting a new truck really isn't an option.

When you say that getting a new truck isn't an option.. do you mean you just can't get a brand new one or do you mean you won't be able to simply sell or trade your current truck for another used truck?

 

If you have to stick with what you have, then get the smaller one. I know your wife wants the bigger one, but honestly it won't be as safe once you add additional weight in the trailer and other gear. Weight doesn't take long to add up when it comes to gear and anything stored in the trailer. Only God knows how much weight alone is in my bed toolbox and I bet that alone is more than that 550 lbs that you said.

 

If you are able to get a different truck then just get a 2500 gasser if you end up getting the bigger trailer.

Yeah swapping rigs isnt really an option we can do, buying a new trailer and all.

 

So, to be safe, better go the lighter route. Wife isnt going to be happy lol. Heck I'm not happy. The larger trailer, really is a beauty. But better safe then sorry

Don't go by the tounge weight in the brochure. Ask the trailer dealer to weigh the tounge on the lot (my RV dealer has a tounge scale about the size of a coffee can). The brochure for my 28 foot trailer said 795 but the actual was 1050. Dry weight is just over 6500. That said, my trailer is just under 7000 loaded and is comfortable to tow with my 14 CCSB 1500 with the max tow.

Yeah that extra 1,100 lbs will really make a HUGE difference in a half ton. I think you made the right choice.

 

Now before your first outing, I'd dump all the driveline fluids - front/rear diffs, tranny, transfer case, and engine oil and go with a top brand synthetic. I prefer Amsoil. I've got Severe Gear 75w-110 in the front and rear diffs (went with the thicker viscosity since I tow alot), & Signature series trans fluid in the tranny/transfer case, and Sig.Series 5w-30 in the engine. I did all that when the truck had 40k on the clock back around '10. Next oil change I'm switching to Signature Series 10w-30 for better protection, and hopefully less oil consumption. Might have to get the AFM tuned out - we'll see ...

 

I've pulled 11k lbs with mine short distances, and haven't had an issue yet. Driveline is quiet, aside from the clunk downshifting that has been there since after 10k miles.

Congrats on the new trailer!!! What model is it? And what one were you looking at? I do agree you made the right choice for your 1500.

And what the heck is the ReCurve Wd system??? Never have heard of it? Newer company? Going to go look it up as we are very close to getting a new tt ourselves and we will need a new hitch system as we sold ours with the trailer.

Interesting. That is similar to mine in principle, but mine is much simpler (and probably cheaper too), without the on/off sway control capability. Best thing I ever installed on this truck as far as towing goes.
