I am working on a 71 and would like to know the best carb to get for it. I like edelbrock but have heard mixed reviews. Also, when I install new carb, is there any priming or prepping I need to do?

What engine is in the truck? If it's a factory engine with a 4 brl, I'd say the best carb is the factory rochester. The Edelbrock is based off that carb, and I've never had problem with them… I've heard of people having problems with those carbs but, a lot of time the carbs are to big for the engine… If it's stock and staying that way, I'd get a factory rebuilt carb. I'd get the Edelbrock if you need more CFM then stock…

there is nothing wrong with a properly built Q jet. factory rating for SBC was 780 cfm, BB was 860 cfm..i think a lot of the bad talk about the Q jet came from the after market carb manufacturers of the day, with their consent power valves leaking, and shade tree part changers who had no idea what they were doing..

I've rebuilt many Q-Jets over the years, they are a very good carb and aren't as difficult to rebuild as some think they are, however they have one issue. The well plugs on the bottom of the carb over time can tend to leak, causing basically what I refer to as a "leak-down" condition. So what happens is every time the vehicle sits the fuel bowl empties into the intake and the engine will either be flooded (if you just drove it 20 minutes ago) or it will require some cranking on the next cold start before the bowl fills enough to get fuel to the engine and the engine to start. If the carb is in this condition my opinion is it's time to find a new carb.

 

That being said, I had a Q-Jet displaying this leak-down condition on my 77 Camaro, after a few attempts to fix it I replaced it with an Edelbrock Performer (which by the way has no similarities with a Q-Jet and is also not based on the Q-Jet either). The performer is based on the old Carter AFB design. The Edelbrocks are excellent carburetors, very reasonably priced, very easy to tune, and are very well designed and made. They also provide both timed and straight engine vacuum ports, for yours you'd want to use the straight vacuum port unless your distributor is not equipped with vacuum advance which in that case you would simply plug both ports. In my application I noticed an immediate improvement in overall performance, especially in the lower RPM acceleration department where the Performer really trumped the Q-Jet and never any coughing back or sputtering either, they're calibrated very good from the factory. For daily driving and up to 400-450 HP the 600 CFM Edelbrock Performer is the one you want. Anything above that and I'd be looking into the Thunder series 650 CFM or larger.

You're right, it's been so long since I've had to deal with a carb, I couldn't remember if it was Carter or Rochester…

Well, they are somewhat similar to a Rochester as well in their function at least and they're for sure nothing like a Holley. Speaking of which, I've never tried one but I hear the Street Avenger series by Holley is pretty good too. I've been very happy with the Edelbrock. A little tip here for all: Call Summit Racing as an example and ask them if they have any factory rebuilt Performers, they did at the time I bought mine. It showed up nice and shiny, looking like brand new, was completely gone through at Edelbrock with normal warranty and I picked it up for under $200. The salesperson tried to discourage me from buying it using the usual scare tactics, but I told him if it went back to Edelbrock and was completely gone through (which it was as it was verified by a tag in the box), I asked him if he really thought they would let an inferior product go out the door and take a chance of giving themselves a bad name? He didn't have much of an answer for that one. The carb has worked perfectly since day one, great carb!

In a DD application I'd stay away from Holley (unless you are going with their EFI kit). It's been my experience with them that they require constant adjustment. They are good race carbs, but I've never had any luck with them on a DD…

I loved my rochesters.. up until a 1984 monte carlo SS I was running in 1996.

I guess ethanol on high compression was all it took to make it not so good anymore.

pinging, unhappy. No tune was working. Ruled out EGR and other weirdness. My locale stops at 91 octane.

the compression had no excuses, although high, not like 1971 of course.

 

anyway, I'd remove the rochester sadly for a vacuum secondary equal barrel Holley for the 1971.

 

make it a fancy one, electric choke, etc.

 

A spacer also works.. in fact that almost saved the oe rochester, but it was not enough.

    • I've installed cheap eBay new aftermarket digitizers before.  They work.  Did a bunch of Cadillac CUE (aka Cadillac's MyLink) for someone years ago.  They all worked fine after the repair.    That number 22740886, that is a component part # for GM.  You can use it to search, but its not something that's obtainable at the dealer level.     So pretty much any of these will work - 2015 Colorado Digitizer for sale | eBay
    • Black bumper and the later years Z-71 style color matched grille.
    • You can install tailpipes that direct the exhaust sideways vs the OEM one that goes straight back. There are several on the market, do you own research. HOWEVER, you need to make sure the Venturi vents are still intact, otherwise it will throw a engine code. There is a sensor somewhere that detects back pressure on the exhaust. And if it doesn't collect the correct metrics, it will throw the truck into limp mode. 
    • "Teardown" is complete. Head surfaces are clean and ready, new intake is prepped and ready. Coolant drained and water pump is removed, radiator is removed, new hoses and pump are ready.   The replacement intake is also from a '95 (with I think 260k, the odometer said). Noticeably less pitting where it covers the rear coolant passages. I'm not sure if that's a tribute to more frequent use, more frequent coolant changes/upkeep, or if the intake was machined at some point. But it appears I found a good one.   My coolant hoses were original, and the lower hose still retained the factory spring inside. It's not really rusty, but it's got deposits all over it. Unsure if I should re-install it (will thoroughly clean it first). Someone said hose technology has gotten better since 1995 (has it?) and I don't need the spring. I think modern EPDM is what made those hoses last from 1995-2026, so it's a question of how much suction can the water pump really pull, and will it collapse the hose without a spring?   I'm stopped and waiting for parts, however.   When I first brought the truck home, the fan was intermittently hitting the radiator shroud. I could see someone had monkeyed with the shroud (put a bunch of cardboard as a spacer between the upper/lower shroud halves. Someone said the motor mounts have likely failed and the engine has sagged. I wasn't sure I believed that. The engine is really solid in its mounts: To remove the old intake I *just* nearly permanently welded to the heads with freshly cured RTV and gasket snot two weeks ago, I literally had to use the arms on my lift and a chain with a bolt attached to the intake to pull it loose. It almost picked the front of the truck off the ground before ....scuuuuuuuuuuup.... I could actually hear the gaskets tearing and it broke loose and the whole truck settled back down. Motor barely moved.   SO, those parts I'm waiting on... The lower radiator mounts/bushings had completely failed. The radiator needs to be insulated from the rad support, and the bushings help the rad stand at the correct height. The plastic "baffle" was also destroyed at some point. Someone had attached the shroud to it incorrectly, overlapping a joint that should have been underlapped, creating another suspect issue potentially causing things to hit the fan. Broken tabs, side is busted off, and it's perma-formed/bent where it was jimmied incorrectly.   The baffle? Unobtainum. Long since discontinued from GM, of course. Aftermarket/capa/chinese? Also unobtanium. In GM's infinite wisdom, it appears there are at least two different variations whether the Blazer is 2 or 4 door, and I can't yet tell if they shared the same part with the S-pickups. Plan B, if I can't find a viable used one, will be to create a bracket to re-assemble the critical joint I need to seal a gap with the shroud. But that will bug me, it won't be...perfect.   The water pump bolts appear to have been installed with...plumber's putty. I guess, sure, if it works...? I've found a few "backyard fixes" like that. Someone's been here before....   If I can't find someone to jam bamboo under my fingernails to fill my free time this week I think I'll install the driver's power window motor and replace the rear door speaker that's inop. I've got a genuine GM "9.5" ohm working replacement. Why GM used a non-standard resistance....nevermind. Of course they did, you can get more sound from a cheap factory amp that way.   And the saga goes on...
