Hood Protector/Bug Guard

Whatever you want to call it...

I was researching the hood protectors and I kept reading about 3M tape holding, etc.

I don't want a hood protector that uses tape. I keep my stuff a long time, and here in SC, in the spring the yellow pollen makes a booger mess out of everything and I took the old protector off my GMT800 after every spring (4 simple screws) to clean out all the pollen and dust that had gotten down in there.

I was looking to get GM part number 19329849 but not if it used 3M tape to keep it in place... but this is the description of it:

  • Simple, no-drill installation utilizes factory mountings for optimal fit and hold to the vehicle

So does it, or does it not use 3M tape as well?

If that one does, are there any that don't?

I'm not interested in hearing about the clear film stuff, only answers to my questions, thanks!

This is the one I bought, and I ended up not really liking it. I put it on, and took it off within a day. You don't use tape, it uses the weather stripping holes on the underside of the hood. Once I installed it, with the weather stripping in place, the shield would almost touch the paint on the driver side hood when you closed the hood, and that bugged me knowing it would rub away at it over time. The suggestion to get a better fitment was to remove the weather stripping under the hood, but I don't want to do that, as I don't want dirt caked over everything, or snow getting in there.

I also had the GM version. Did not care for it as it made closing the hood much tighter and the hood seemed to move more at highway speed. I will say it was a nice HP and did not use any tape.

Thanks guys.

I popped my hood last night and looked... I didn't realize there was a seal there...

So how does this install? Do you pop out 4 or 5 of the plastic push pins, slip the guard between the hood and seal and screw it down or do you have to remove the whole seal and it will now push pin into the guard (meaning you remove seal, install guard, then reinstall seal over guard)?

I tried to find some pics or installation tips online and came up empty. I can't believe how hard this has become  It was so easy on my old truck, I just want one that removes easily to clean up.

What I highlighted is basicly what is done. As stated above too, it did make the hood hard to close, which then caused my shield to sit too close to the hood. I think removing the seal would make it a better fit, but I didn't want that.

If that's the case, I think I'm going to get one and play with it. If it only installs in a few spots, I may shave down the hood seal where the mounting spots are. My GMT800 didn't have a seal, but the hood also folded over and fit "over" the top of the grille. I can see why there's a seal there, water can run from the top of the grille to under the hood now.

Or if it's just too close to the hood on the top side, I can put a couple of those half circle rubber bumpers on the back side.

I thought about the rubber circles on the back side as well, but still figured that would work away at the paint on the hood too.

If you want the shield I bought, I'll give it to you for the cost of shipping. It has a couple light scratches from throwing it up in the rafters (yes I threw it cause I was pissed at the fitment), and it's missing one of the clips (dropped it when taking it off and somehow it completely disappeared).

You can use it as a test rat on fitment if you want.

Not a fan of stick on either. But not sure what's good for new hood design.

You have the actual GM P/N one, right? Smoke gray or matte black?

Are the clips something I could find in the help section of crapzone or similar?

I imagine from MN to SC shipping is probably $20 + ?

I can't see shipping being more than $20, probably more like $15. I will get a quote though if you want to message me your address.

The clips, yes...I think you can find them pretty generically or something that will work. If I remember right, it was pretty simple tree type.

It's the smoked one ( That's the link to the exact one I bought and from the same place. Part Number

I bought the GM bug guard as well and hate it. The mounts suck and pop out randomly. Terrible fit for an OEM product. It makes the hood wobble on the highway and is way to close to the paint. It's total crap in my opinion. Mine is even warping in the middle and has only been on the truck a few weeks. I'm going to replace it with a Stampede Vigilante. It's not supposed to need double sided tape or require drilling to mount either.

I also had the GM hood protector in chrome. Had to adjust and slam hood to close. Had to remove weather stripping also. I returned and put on a clear bra instead. The hood protector looked good on vehicle but very poor fit for a OEM part.
