6.0L engine knock

What's up, guys

 

I took my truck to the dealer with the hopes of fixing this engine knock problem. It is the same old cold start knock that lasts for a while, ya know, the "carbon buildup problem" Well, the dude told me it is not carbon, it is a lifter problem that is making all of the racket. Is this true, or just another creative bs story? Another niggle I have is when I run regular or plus I get a clatter from the engine from about 2000 rpm up to 3500. Running premium (93 octane) eliminates it. A buddy of mine said it's the valves. What gives, and can I fix this crap?  ???

The clatter you are hearing from 2000-to 3500 sounds like detonation to me. That why the 93 octane helps.

sounds like you need to ditch the GM gassers and either buy the Duramax or go Dodge/Ford lol jk.

 

On pickuptruck.com they are saying that GM has authorized the replacement of 6.0 with CSK and replacement of Rods and crank I believe on the 5.3's with CSK.  Try looking there.

The '01 1500 5.3L I owned had the cold-start noise.  On some mornings it sounded like a diesel for about a minute until it warmed up.  I had the dealer look at it a few times but like everyone else they just said "they all do it/don't worry about it".  I just learned to live with it.  The noise never got worse and never seemed to affect the performance although I only had about 27K miles on it when I traded it on a 3/4 ton.  

 

After it warmed up in a minute or two it ran great and didn't make any abnormal sounds.

I drove a 2500 with the 6 liter today and i noticed the engine was pretty noisy.  It wasnt the CSK (my 5.3 has it) i just noticed alot of in cab noise.

It could be CSK, it could be lifters!

 

It's not uncommon, albeit on older engines, that lifters until they get oil pressure built back up in them can create a knocking sound.  That is because there is excessive slack in the valvetrain in such cases.

 

At the same time, it could be CSK.

 

If they used a stethoscope, probed around the engine and heard the knocking around the intake area, I'd lead that more to be valvetrain, lifters, rockers than a rod or piston slap.  If conversely, you steth it on the side of the block and it sounds like a bunch of rocks rotating around, It's lend credence to cold start knock rods and/or piston slap.

 

I don't think the dealer is necessarily giving you an excuse.  Probe them for more info as to how they came to that determination and then make your own decision as to whether or not they are feeding you a line of B.S.

Thanks for the info guys :thumb:   I'm planning on taking it back to the dealer for other issues anyway and will probe a little deeper into this. Heck, I might even try to work my way into a new SS motor!

I've noticed that thrumming noise too with the 6.0Ls I've driven.  I always thought it was the auto transmission because it sounds like it's right under the cab.  I don't think it sounds bad though.  

 

My F250's V10 makes a subdued rumble in lower gears that sounds and feels like you're sitting over the noise and I think it's mostly coming from the tranny also.  The noise really makes me grin when I'm pulling an uphill extrance ramp or lugging the trailer up a long grade.
