2014 denali rim leak caused by corroding rim

Hey guys has anyone else had a problem with theyre chrome denali rims losing bead because of corrosion?as of now the tite shop put bead sealer and said should be ok for while but other wheels look just as bad and us only a matter of time before the rims loose bead again.this should not be acceptable for a truck bought brand new last year..

Wait! Ford is telling everybody that Aluminum doesn't rust. It can't be!

Then Ford would be correct...aluminium corrodes, iron rusts.

I have the polished aluminum sey rims wondering what can be done to prevent this

 

Do you live in an area of TX that gets snow/salt in the winter? Buy a second set of wheels. The only fix to saving aluminum wheels from corrosion.

I haven't noticed any issues on my current truck, but had some bead leaks on my past truck and wife's minivan because of this. As you know, the tires lose air pressure when it's colder and it makes it easier for the salt to penetrate the bead/rim lip, so I was told to make sure you keep the tires properly inflated at all times to help prevent it.

That's my point. Ford makes a point in every one of their commercials to say that their trucks won't rust - they're trying to trick ignorant people into thinking that there won't be any problems with corrosion. Not true.

There won't be - AL develops a protective layer of white oxide when bare and exposed to the elements, it doesn't "corrode" or "rust" the way you think of w/ steel. Once the layer of oxide is there, the oxidization stops and thats pretty much it. Cast AL is more porous than rolled sheet AL (which is what the Ford trucks exterior is made with) and you can develop cracks in AL castings over time that have been exposed to EXTREME caustic conditions like acidic air, years and years of heavy salt, etc. - but that is rare and the extreme. The only cast AL parts on a ford truck are the same that would be in a GM truck - suspension components, wheels, motor block, differential and transmission housings.

 

If you have a steel hood and an AL hood and both have been exposed to 150,000 miles of rock chips and salted winter roads, the AL hood will have chips where paint is gone and there may be some white spots and you may be able to rub off a little white dust in extreme instances, but the integrity of the hood will remain, it won't corrode, it and AL oxide - if it is extreme enough to do "run" off when wet and that would be EXTREME - won't damage paint like rust stains do. A steel hood under the same conditions will rust, may corrode & rot through (all depends on the alloy and whether it was galvanized & climate conditions etc.), and you will notice it alot more, rust also will spread and eat away @ parts of the hood that have not been exposed, while AL oxidization is localized and does not spread to areas that weren't exposed.

 

I'm in the metals business....and worked for an AL foundry, and I have intimate knowledge specifically regarding the AL used in the F150, the manufacturing process, and what the long term durability will be like.

 

An AL bodied vehicle definitely has benefits over a comparable steel bodied vehicle.

 

Back to the rim specifically though - what you're seeing isn't necessarily an issue w/ the AL but rather the chrome cladding and it is probably very thick but apparently not very tough, if its thick enough and corrodes down to the cast AL base of the wheel, then yeah you could lose your beads. This has to do w/ the chrome cladding though not because its an AL wheel, all AL wheels have protective coating either painted or polished always w/ a clearcoat on top, chrome wheels are stupid if you drive in winter climates or get them gouged up - the only protective layer for the bare AL is the chrome plating and it corrodes - happens on lots of vehicles w/ chrome rims not just GM trucks. Happened to my buddy's old lincoln LS as a matter of fact.

 

Moral of the story - don't get chrome rims if you live in areas w/ bad winters, extreme weather, and salted roads - or get a 2nd set of wheels for the winter to save the flashy bling rims.

Well south tx it never snows here so I guess that's a plus for me and I assuming keeping them dry helps?

Where do you get air in your tires? Excess water doesnt help

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
