Steering wheel is not centered

So I had my truck in the dealership for a noise in my steering wheel, which they fixed, but also I wanted them to fix my steering wheel angle. If you look at my picture, the steering wheel is cocked to the left when driving in a straight line. I asked the service tech and he said they might have to do an alignment and that would be on me because my warranty has expired. When I picked the truck up, I ended up having to pay for an alignment and he said the problem was solved. It was hard to tell for sure until I got on the highway, but the steering wheel is still not centered. This should be an easy fix shouldn't it? I remember with my last truck I had this same issue with a local shop and they were able to fix it, no problem. I don't have an up to date picture, but I feel like my steering wheel is even more out of line that it was when I brought it in.

Mine does the same thing, except I have to tilt it to the right to go straight. I would go the dealer, but the way my wheels are setup they'd probably laugh. :dunno:

Does your truck pull to either side? I've got my alignment sheet and everything looks good, but steering wheel is way out of whack. For your case, I can see how they would try to cast blame on your setup, but I've still got stock wheels and tires lol

On a side note, that stance is awesome

As I understand it, an alignment will ensure your wheels are centered correctly, but not the steering wheel....that's a separate job/task but it is do-able.

If I straighten the steering wheel dead center it'll pull to the left pretty hard. But like you, I too have an alignment sheet and everything is good to go. It's funny because it pulled just a hair to the right so I went and got it aligned, and they showed me how out of whack it was before I brought it in. Now that it's fixed it pulls more even more when dead center. Beats me honestly lol.

Thank you sir, lovin' it so far!

Well I agree with you. I think it is a seperate job, but I think it also all ties into an alignment. My frustration is the truck doesn't pull to either side and drives straight as an arrow. The problem resides in the steering wheel being turned to the left while driving straight. That was my main request at the dealership to fix the steering wheel angle. So I ended up paying for an alignment and the problem hasn't changed

Yea, who knows. Maybe if I tell them the opposite of what is actually going on, they'll somehow fix it then lol

It's a separate job because it DOESN'T tie into an alignment is what I'm saying. When you request an "alignment" they're going to check your wheels, not your steering wheel. You'd have to ask them to check the alignment as well as center your steering wheel. At least that's what I've run into in the past anyway.

On a side note, the steering wheel noise you brought it in for. What was the actual noise and how'd you replicate it? My steering wheel has been making a noise for a long time now and I've always wanted to bring it in but never have. Mine creaks pretty bad whenever I turn it.

Ok, I'm not disagreeing with you as I don't know much about alignments and all that. I just thought it was interesting that all I asked for was my steering wheel to be centered. I told him the truck drives straight and doesn't pull to either side, its only a matter of the steering wheel not being centered. I was then told I might need an alignment and would have to pay for it. So I paid for an alignment thinking the steering wheel was now centered and it isn't. That's where my frustration comes from.

My steering wheel had a clicking/ticking sound when turning the wheel. To hear it best, the radio is off/muted and standing still, I would just turn the wheel and you can hear it in the video. I did notice the truck HAS to be warm for the problem to occur.

The problem was the steering gear was binding up and I had a bad ball joint. All of that was replaced under warranty even with my leveling kit installed.

Mine makes a similar sound but not as pronounced as yours. I'll have to get a video if it, and hopefully stop by the dealer. My only issue they aren't very lenient when it comes to mods and I'm sure they'll blame it on the level. Even though it's done this before the level.

Pretty typical, before my last alignment my wheel was about 7 degrees to the left, they said they got it straight but now it's about 3 degrees to the right, I just haven't crawled under it to fix it.

My steering wheel is off centered as well but im pretty sure they are all designed & made that way

    • I installed the Auto stop eliminator on my 21 Sierra SLT shortly after I got it. They have a detailed video instruction on how, took me about 20-30 minutes to do. I was apprehensive too to start tearing apart a new truck but it was pretty easy install. Like you mentioned get some trim tools. I went to Harbor freight and picked up a set. If you can find some install videos/instructions to give you and idea for a plan of attack you should be fine.
    • If all oil manufacturers had to meet a higher standard for not just the initial filtering of the oil but that they had to improve on their formulation so that the oil cleaned the engine such as the Valvoline R&P or the new Mobil product ( assuming it works similar of course ), and the oil was changed on an interval based on good UOA data, there shouldn't be any gremlins running around like miniture rats on top of your heads to be washed down into the oil pan below 😁

    • A while back on another thread there were comments and thoughts on air filters and I know that can tend to be a bit of a hot topic because of outfits that have a vested interest in selling aftermarket air boxes fitted with the gauze type of oiled elements touting the lower air restriction. However and unfortunately I don't know where I have seen the test results in the past about the amount of dirt through a test procedure that these style of filters do pass more dirt through than a properly designed ( not some cheap Chinese knock off ) paper/synesthetic media filter can do. Lake Speed had a conversation on that topic with one of the employees at Donaldson and there seemed to be a consensus of these oiled filters falling short in the absolute percentage of dirt holdback.    Which all ties back into how good the air filter is on the engine at keeping dirt out as that is going to reflect as a contaminant introduced into the oil as well as cylinder wear even if some of that dirt does find its way out of the exhaust rather then the crank case. Put another way that one can throw the kitchen sink at filtering the oil and using a bypass system which I fully expect will do nothing but good for the oils contamination but if the air filter system isn't doing its job then its preventing the engine from reaching the best wear/lasting case scenario instead.    Now perhaps this topic is or isn't for this particular thread but Grumpy Bear or anyone else for that matter, do you have access to some scientific trust worthy testing on engine air filter types to get some proper comparison data to post up.
    • WOW, something we agreed on. I only bought at sticker twice. A 94 impala ss and an Acura intagra type r. Made money on the first. Still have the second.
