Need help with heat!

Hello guys I have a 2000 Silverado 1500 ext cab . And the heat is not consistant.

I'm trying to figure out what parts to replace or where to start.

My problem is my truck takes forever to get to normal operating temp so I'm thinking replacing the thermostat should handle that. Cause I have good clean coolant and the level is correct.

Second problem I really need help with is the actual heater controls . I'd say 9 times out of 10 my blower motor blows strong but there's times where is doesn't and the blower makes a lot of bad noise so I have to turn it down and then turn it back up. Does this sound like a blower going bad ?

Third problem is sometimes my heat turns from warm to cold and back n forth. I'll have to manual switch it to cold then back to hot on the controls to try n get it warm again.

Is this a hvac switch controller problem or a blender door issue? I need help figuring this out

If a blower motor resister was going bad what kinda problems or symptoms would it give me?

Thank you all in advance for the help, it's getting cold out and I gotta fix this problem and get parts ordered. On a budget of course

Well changed the thermostat yesterday and pulled the motor out . It looked fine and was clean. Cabin filters are clean.

Definitely seems to blow warmer air quicker now. Just doesn't blow as strong as I would like.

So currently everything is workin as it should. Just the problem where randomly the heat will go cold on its own. And I have to switch to cold and back to hot for it to get warm again. Would that be a blender door?

Also on my controls, I always have to bang my dash for the lights to come on on my hvac controls. Anyone have this problem? Should I just replace the entire 3 knob control panel there

Maybe some loose wires on the back? Maybe the blend doors if the air flow volume is changing. Hard to troubleshoot this far away.

I understand, if a blender door actuator were to go bad what symptoms could it cause ?

Never had the problem myself so I'm not sure but I would imagine it would direct the air someplace other than where you wanted it to go and maybe even go somewhere that you could hear the fan running but could not be sure where the airflow was actually going.

From what I have heard is that if the blend actuators go bad they tend to get stuck at times, then when you sweep the temp back and forth they free up. Something to do with the little motor in them. I'd say it sounds like that could be the temp issue. As for the blower motor maybe it is the control panel. Since it seems to work 90% of the time.

Ok, yeah I does work 90% of the time. Another weird thing is I have to hit my dash one time for the lights in the controls to come on then they stay on. Everytime I start my truck I have to bang the dash once to get them to come on. Really weird

I replaced my blower motor in 2013. The blend door actuator associated with the manual hot/cold controls has been making a tick/tock noise for over a year. Also, during this time, I have tolerated longer than normal interior cool down times. I think my memory had faded some and I assumed the time it took to cool the interior was manifest from the truck age and maybe low freon charge.

now, with the actuator making its tick/tock noise, I am on the cusp of ordering a new actuator. Hoping it resolves the tick/tock and returns to cooling the interior at a more rapid pace. will also be checking the sweep of the blend door to ensure it is not sticking open/closed.

Sounds like you fixed the first problem with the thermostat.

Second problem sounds like the blower motor could have a bearing starting to go out?

Third sounds like the temperature blend door actuator is faulty. They have a position sensor that is crap. Tons of issues.

If the blower resistor had issues you would not have all speeds. They either work or they don't. Should not cause any intermittent issues.

Thanks so much! Great advice. My hear defiantly seems hotter and gets warm faster after the coolant change and thermostat.

And I think you on to something with the blower motor bearings. Cause it seems like it losses balance and makes a bunch of rattle noise then I turn down it stops and I can turn it back up. So I'm just waiting for the motor to die at this point.

And all my speeds work so my resistor must be good for now at least lol.

I guess I'll just wait till my blender door decides to quit working before I replace it.

Thanks for all the help guys!
