Hey everyone, we noticed this question comes up a lot, so we finally put together one master cheat sheet. It covers the exact oil capacity, filter numbers, and drain plug torques for every GM truck and SUV from 2016 through 2026. Bookmark the full guide here so you never have to guess again: https://www.gm-trucks.com/gm-engine-oil-capacity-guide/

Even if your dealer or quik change spot puts in the correct amount of oil, it's more than likely that your dipstick will register way overfull after one of those places changes your oil. They probably leave the drain plug out for maybe 5 or a maximum of 10 minutes, not near enough time to get all of the old, dirty oil out, especially if the oil isn't hot when the drain is initiated. My best guess is there could be up to 1 quart of old remaining in your engine when a 2nd party changes your oil, it takes quite a bit of time for oil to drain down from rocker assemblies. Only way to ensure that you get most of the old oil out and have the level read right on the dipstick with the manufacturer recommended fill quantity is do this yourself, drain it hot, and allow an adequate drain time, the longer the better, preferably overnight.

I do quick oil changes in 15 minutes, dump 8 quarts in and it's right on the money. If the truck is level or better yet rolled up on a block of wood to angle the drainplug downwards, it's even faster to drain it all.

Even if it's slightly over full it won't matter. There is never 8 quarts in the oil pan when it's running and the crank will never slap the oil either.

I used to have my oil changed at a reputable lube shop near my house in Mi. However I moved since then and the last few times I have changed my oil in my 2018 Silverado 5.3L, I have put in 6.8 qts. The dipstick was at the top of the cross hatches showing full after a start and run for a few min. Now, my issue with this 8qt business is the problem with over filling the crank case. I am not a certified mechanic but would this not cause serious cavitation and poor oil circulation in the crank journals?  Unless the incorrect dip stick was installed in all the Silverado, GMC  vehicles we should only fill to the top of the crosshatch and that comes out to 6.8 qts. I can see a litlle overfill is ok but to be 1.2 quarts over seems as bit high.  Just my 2 cents. I am pushing 100,000 soon. Knock on wood... have never had a mechanical issue to this day related to oiling.

Its 8 quarts.  Get a new dipstick and see how it reads.

I could see 6.8 qts if you drained it and put a dry filter on it and then checked it before running it and checking for leaks. Even with that it would show low the next time it was checked (assuming it was checked)

Assuming its using a PF63 I would fill it with 8 and then whatever the level settled out to after a run and a 30 min wait would be my new mark on the dipstick.
