2012 Duramax - No forward or reverse

Hello folks. I'm at my wits end, here. Son was driving my truck last Sunday. Left the house, drove about 7.5 miles, majority on interstate, with the truck in 4HI. Pulled into a drive-through, noticed the truck was in 4HI, switched it to 2HI, and it would no longer drive.

  • No forward or reverse.
  • No lights on the 4x4 rotary switch.
  • Indicator on transmission selector flashes when in Drive or Reverse.
  • Rolls in Park as if 4x4 is in neutral.

I've checked all the fuses, connectors and wiring, to no avail. Looking online, pretty much all of the information I can locate is pre-Second Generation.

I'm currently out of work, so the Dealer is a last resort. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'd get the truck scanned for any possible codes and then move on from there. Unfortunately in this day and age without codes you're going to chase your tail to figure out problems of this nature.

That's my problem. I can't move the truck. And, if I'm not mistaken, this will take a scanner that can read transmission codes. The scanners that they have at the auto parts stores won't read transmission codes, if I'm correct.

If you go on amazom or ebay there bluetooth dongles you can plug into your OBD2 port. Then you download the accompanying app and you can scan your truck that way. The dongles are only $20 or so and the app is free or i think $5.

Sounds like the transfer case is stuck in neutral. So if you put it in neutral and push on 4HI it doesn't do anything? Sounds like an actuator is stuck.

I checked using a scanner and there were no codes stored, pending, or permanent for the TCM. Does that make sense?

That's exactly what I believe to be the case, too. Correct, it doesn't matter where you turn the selector switch, it does nothing. I've even tried the process of placing it into TC Neutral and taking it out of TC Neutral, with no change.

I wonder if your selector switch is broken, not making contact to switch in and out of each position.

I'm down to either that, or the shift motor/actuator. I'm hoping that it's not the TCCM.

Okay...I pulled the TC Motor/Actuator. I removed the motor from the housing and it was all busted up inside the motor. The rest of the Actuator assembly was good. The motor shaft would not even turn, but the "sprocket" that drives the TC was free moving. So, I need a new TC Motor/Actuator.

My question would now be, how can I change the TC to 2HI and keep it there to at least make the truck driveable until I can get a new part? Any thoughts?

Is this part not readily available at a local autoparts store like Advance Auto Parts, Napa, Autozone, etc?

Sorry, just saw this. No, it's not, which is weird. However, they do offer them re-manufactured, and those do for about a hundred under the new part price from GM. I've heard bad things with regard to the used parts.

Reman vs used is completely different. Its like when you buy a replacement alternator they are reman too. But its just the housing is leftover. Internally it's all new again.
