2015 GMC 1500 crew cab seat questions

Hi guys!

I am an automotive upholsterer in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. One of the very steady sources of income I have is supplying and installing after market leather kits. I have a customer that has a '15 1500 crew cab with manual seats. He has found a drivers side 8 way power seat that he would like to install and have the motion ( up, down, back and forward, lumbar and recline ) working. My question is does the BCM have anything to do with these functions? Previously I have just ran power from under the drivers side foot well to do this but that was before BCM's. Well can this be done? right now there is only the seat belt connection in the yellow plug under the seat rail, no air bags or power wires in the harness.

thank you for you time

I don't see any reason why you couldn't run your own power/ground circuits to the seat.

BCM is only for the fancy stuff, like keeping your radio on when you kill the engine, until you open the door, or keeping your headlights on for x amount of minutes ...

If a BCM were an option, I'd DELETE ...

No BCM required. Hopefully it is just a plain power seat, no memory . Then it is just 12v 30a breaker to terminal 6 of the seat switch and ground to terminal 2 (ten way connector for both)

Not trying to be picky, but, you must have more than one wire already under the seat. You have air bags in the seats themselves that have their own wiring. You new seat should also have this connection that needs to be made. If you are lucky, the air bag wiring is not included in the connector for the power seat on the new seat you wish to install.

As already posted, you will have to determine if the seat memory is required to connected or not. Seat memory is the function where you can store different seat positions for each driver(usually a max of 2 drivers). This is very likely stored in the BCM.

So there is no memory in the seat itself, like a car stereo? In that case you could just run a fused 12v direct from the battery.

That figures. Anything to create unnecessary complexity. :banghead:

Don't really know for sure. But, it would make more sense to have it in the BCM. The power seat is just some motors, probably stepper motors so the position could be controlled these days. Prior to memory seats, power seats were just plain motors that used stops in the tracks to prevent over running the track. Hit the stop, and the motor would still try to push through it. Sort of like current power windows. Watch the lights dim if you press up window on a closed window to see what I mean. Using stepper motors avoids that. You can't really compare radios to power seats. Radios have complex circuits already, and they already have processors in them. Power seats do not need processors, or any complex circuitry.

Yeah I always hated that about power windows. Figured they did that on purpose so the motors would burn out sooner, netting them some more revenue.

My '93 Volvo 940 has memory seats - 3 settings too - all right in the control panel on the side of the seat. Fairly simple.

hey guys,

The truck that is getting the power seats is a base work model and DOES NOT have airbags nor the wiring on the seat frame for them. So I'm to understand that the seats will work with power hooked up as stated in post number 3?. I would think that a 2014 1500 8 way power seat would have memory but the customer doesn't need that he is trying to make the drivers seat more comfortable on long trips.

According to GM web site (both USA and Canada sites), all Sierras (base, SLE and SLT) have:

Airbags – driver and front-passenger, seat-mounted side-impact - See more at: http://www.gm.ca/gm/english/vehicles-2015/gmc/sierra/compare-options-and-specifications#safety

Airbags – front-to-rear, outboard seating positions, head curtain side-impact - See more at: http://www.gm.ca/gm/english/vehicles-2015/gmc/sierra/compare-options-and-specifications#safety

Airbags – Passenger Sensing System

Airbags – rear outboard seating positions, seat-mounted side-impact - See more at: http://www.gm.ca/gm/english/vehicles-2015/gmc/sierra/compare-options-and-specifications#safety

There will be a tab attached to the seat cover backrest near the top on the outboard side of the seat that says Air Bag. Not arguing, just want to make sure you are aware of this since this may be a show stopper if the replacement seat does not have air bags as well.

Don't the trucks save the mirror position along with the seat position when you use the memory function?

I have no idea - I don't have that option in mine. I've got the LT2 package, not the LTZ (summer wheels are off an LTZ, however).

Yes they do.

Hey Guys!

I have just completed the install of a power seat ( 8 way power seat from a 2014 truck) into this truck. What I did was ran a power line from the battery to the power seat module under the new drivers seat and hooked up power to the 30 amp as well as the 10 amp feed. I also ran a new ground from the module to the body and this will operate all power motors. You do not have any seat memory nor did I worry about the heated /cooled motors and functions. I have installed after market seat heaters with switches in dash in factory location. On a side note I was wrong about there being no air bag on the base models, there is both passenger and drivers side airbags on these seats.

Thank you for the help!

Geoff

What year truck did the power seat come out of?
