2015 Silverado Questions

Hey all, just wanted to introduce myself since I'm new to owning a truck and have a few questions. I've been stalking the forums a little bit leading up to this but I figured since I picked up the new truck yesterday I should finally make an account.

I have a couple of questions, I'm going to search around a bit but if anyone wants to drop me some quick answers it would be appreciated (I looked very briefly but didn't come across rock solid answers, please don't think I was too lazy too look, I'll continue searching if no one drops me a response!)

I picked up a 2015 Silverado Double Cab 4x4 Black Out Edition and am loving it so far, however I do want to lower it a bit. I'm not talking about slamming it to the ground, I'm thinking more of a leveling kit and 3/5 drop maybe. Most of the kits I've seen online are for 2WD only unless it specifically mentions 4x4. Is there a reason that 4x4's shouldn't be lowered or is it just rare that people who buy 4x4s want to lower them? I am aware that by lowering the truck you directly effect the amount of weight you can tow/haul and potentially risk bottoming out depending on how far you drop it, but I would think it would be easier to find a kit or maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places.

My second question was I saw several threads and kits available to upgrade the IO4 4.2" screen to the IO6 8" screen, I do plan on doing this but I was curious if anyone has asked their dealer to flash the HMI? Most of the kits to do this from what I saw were in the $1,000 range and it seems like it's a pretty simple process. I'm fairly technical and have downloaded a copy of the OSS software to play around with it, but this is my first time trying to mess with it. I was curious if anyone has bought the OEM components and asked their dealer to just flash IO6 onto their HMI so that I don't have to spend $1,000 and ship mine back to someone else?

My third question is more of an opinion question, what does everyone prefer as far as tonneau covers go? I don't really like the look of the soft roll up covers, I'm sure they're fine for most people but I'm worried about someone just walking by and cutting mine with a knife. I live near Philadelphia and don't want to come out to find the truck has been cut into so I was leaning towards the hard cover ones, more specifically the retractable ones like RetraxOne or Jackrabbit because they also lock. However I've seen some negative reviews about them getting wavy at highway speeds and some other complaints, so I was hoping for some suggestions from people who have had multiple styles/trucks. This being my first truck I'm hesitant to drop $1,200+ for a Jackrabbit cover then not like it.

Lastly, as I mentioned I'm in the Philadelphia area, does anyone happen to know of any local truck places to get work done around here that you trust? I'm new to the area (~6 months) and while I'm comfortable installing/doing some of the work on my truck I also know I'm not a professional and would much rather pay to have someone reputable do it right. I'm hoping to hold onto this truck for a very long time and don't mind paying for quality work.

Other than that thanks so much in advance for anyone who takes the time to respond, I look forward to hanging out on the forums here, looks like a lot of people have some great trucks!

In case anyone is interested here's a picture of her before I do anything to her!

DJM does a 2/3.5 drop for the 4x4 trucks. Basically new lower control arms and a rear shackle kit that also involves removing the stock rear leaf spring block.

Not sure on your HMI questions.

I have a Bakflip cover and am mostly satisfied with it.

I can help with 2 of the questions.

I had a Vette that I bought a nav radio for and put it in myself and then just took it to the dealer and they flashed it in. Cost me about $75.

I wanted the same in a tonneau cover. I went with a Paragon cover. Hard aluminum and locks for only $699. I haven't had a problem with it yet. Just another option to look in to.

Ahh just checked that one out, not too bad on price! Thanks for the suggestions!

That's great that they were willing to do that, I'll have to call around tomorrow and find out.

I saw the peragon covers and their is definitely some appeal, the thing I liked about the Jackrabbit was that it locked in I believe 1 foot increments so it wasn't quite an all open or all closed deal, I also don't believe it needed the pullstrap either. Thanks for the suggestion though I'll have to weigh the options.

Nice truck. It looks Evil.....in a good way.

A window tint should complete the look.

I would highly recommend the Bak Revolver X2. Great looking cover, easy to use, and pretty darn secure.

Getting it tinted tomorrow, the place I go to isn't open on weekends :)

nice truck! not sure what the laws are in PA but in MA you can only go like 35% or something like that...doesn't even look tinted...anyway, a buddy of mine is a cop and he has the same Black Out Edition as you and his windows are dark! He's a cop so I thought he just knew some people and they looked the other way...he said NO, when I have my car inspected I just roll the windows down...he said they won't even think to roll them up. I thought that was brilliant! I'm thinking about having mine taken out and redone to match the factory rears.

I've gotten 5% tint on every car I've ever owned. It's not legal in PA on the front windows, I lived in NJ previously and it's not legal there either.

Honestly if I get a ticket for it I just pay it and move on with life. I have some friends who are LEOs at various levels so I have their PBA/FOP cards which have gotten me out of a ticket or two but some cops have a real hard on for it and will ticket you regardless. PA seems to be more lax about it than NJ, NJ cops will go out of their way to turn around and chase you down for a tint ticket, so far in PA no one has really cared about my 1 series with 5% all around.

I've heard random stories of people being made to remove it on the spot but I honestly don't believe it ever happens unless someone is rude to the cop, no cop wants to sit there while you peel off your tint. As far as inspections go, NJ is emissions only so they didn't care. When I moved to PA and got my inspection done at the dealer they didn't even mention it to me, I had checked it out on their website, and while it's illegal they don't fail your inspection for it. I've had buddies who just get the tint put on after inspection to be safe but I've never had an issue first hand.

Dude, 5%? I made the mistake of going that dark on one of my black cars years ago and hated it at night. Terrible visibility and that was when I was in my 20's! Guess I'm getting old, I did my truck with Pinnacle 30% and it matches the factory tint pretty well. Not bad to see out of either.

Yea, it's definitely dark, but that's what I love about it. Visibility can be rough at times but only usually in areas with no lighting, like a residential area with no street lamps. Any other times I can see fine, maybe I just have good vision.

Being a taller guy I found in most cars that I drove headlights coming at me and behind me were almost eye level so without the tint I had more trouble seeing because I was being blinded. This wasn't my initial reason for getting the tint, it was just a great coincidence that no one was blinding me anymore.

If you think 5% is bad, you should see 2.5%!

My 1 series I just traded in for the Silverado & My Cobalt SS I had before the 1 series, I just love the way it looks too much.

Yea, mine was the twin scroll turbo 135, I enjoyed it a lot but it was quite inconvenient not having a spare tire or having room for anything in it, hence the truck!

Got the tint put on today, I feel like it's lighter than the previous tint I had on my 135i (I believe that was SunTek tint, whereas this is Llumar ATR iirc). It also could just be that the sun was shining basically directly onto the truck when I took the first one.

    • Any update if the new valve cover help with the oil consumption?  I have a 2014 GMC sierra and my truck is consuming a lot of oil so I’m wondering if replacing the driver side valve cover will stop some of the oil consumption. Thanks
    • I bought belts and pulleys for my '20 L5P at Rock Auto a couple years ago. I have used them for many years, and almost always save significant money, especially when I buy maintenance stuff ahead of time.   They carry many OEM parts, which is all I use unless an aftermarket is shown to be same/superior, or if it is an insignificant part or unavailable OEM part anywhere else. RA is usually lower priced, often by a bunch, but parts are sometimes unavailable or out of stock, and I do shop around and sometimes find better prices at other sites.   Be aware that you pay shipping, and if you buy multiple items and they are coming from different warehouses, the shipping can kill the advantage. Planning ahead is best if possible.   If you have a transmission service in the near future, check out their OEM (AC Delco ULV) fluid, usually MUCH less than anywhere else.
    • New member here, very long time occasional guest. Saw this thread, thought it would be a good time to contribute someting. It is only my experience and not a claim that everyone will have the same.   I bought my '20 3500 L5P new and have put 99.9% (literally) of it's current ~400k miles on it myself, with over 50% of that towing loads between 4k to 15k, and to me this truck has been nothing short of amazing. For the first 235k I had zero issues, and from there until 321k I replaced a NOx sensor, two failing glow plugs, and three of the notorious injector connectors. I believe this truck is in part, a testament to good luck, but also good care and following a decent maintenance schedule (I also keep meticulous records.) As a result, it looks as good as a well cared for 70k rig, up and down, inside and out.   At some point before that 321k mile mark I began to get a little spooked about the 10L1000, especially the valve body. Word of mouth about potential issues prompted me to jump on the net to sift through all the noise and determine what all the fuss was about. I routinely take long trips, coast-to-coast and points in between, so roadside breakdowns can be '...a thousand miles from nowhere' and a bit of a challenge, and though I had no issues, my guard was up and activated.   And then I stumbled across a chance to salvage some parts off a new 2025 that had been wrecked in transport. I grabbed a few wear items (alternator, pulleys, etc.) and on a whim asked what the ten speeder would cost me. It was cheap...really cheap. I knew some changes had been made in the '24+ version 10L and were supposedly not compatible, but I called service/parts at my local Chevy dealer and asked why and they didn't know. A call to a well known aftermarket transmission outfit revealed it was very likely it would be fine, but to them not 100% sure.   Because it was cheap (really cheap) and I was spooked, I took the chance. Had it installed by a local shop and it worked like a champ, shifted just like the original. At it's first service at 37k, I had the shop put in a Next Gen valve body kit, which after some initial hiccups and rough shifts, smoothed out though with somewhat firmer shifting.   All that said, I have a very serious concern about my newer transmission as just two weeks ago it suddenly began to exhibit a strong reluctance to engage forward or reverse. It was a bit past due anyway so I took it in for service. The reason it was sticking was due to 'glitter' in the fluid clogging the filter...not good folks, often indicates a converter giving out. We ended up going ahead with the new filter and fluid, first to see if it would move and shift, and then if so buy me a little time. It did, and I've driven it over a thousand miles and it is shifting smooth, no noises or slipping. Regardless, it looks like a third gearbox is in my future so I can resume taking long trips with some confidence. In the very short term, my curiosity will have me examining the fluid to check how much glitter has reappeared.   An earlier poster had alleged, in the context of 10L100 failures, that it is another example of how we seasoned citizens somehow descend into hysteria, lose control of our senses, and react irrationally after brief encounters with the idiocy of the internet infosphere. Let me say (and I have used and abused said internet since it's infancy) there is no segment of the populace that has a corner on over-reaction to digital garbage. Just as my offering of experience in this arena is purely anecdotal and should not be considered gospel or all-encompassing, I believe it is still worthwhile information to consider, along with other relevant anecdotal experiences about things like complex transmissions, especially when balanced with other sources.   So to answer the original question, yes I got high miles out of my first 10L, trouble free for 321,000. Now I really wonder how much longer it would have went. Did I 'overreact' to the internet ghouls by replacing a 'good' one with a 'bad' one? Maybe. Who knows, the thing might have taken a puke a 100 miles later. So I'll just fix it again, then move on and start thinking about all the other stuff that will eventually wear out. It still has the original brakes (they're at ~60%), original injectors/pump, turbo, water pump, etc....pretty much original everything. Knock on wood.
    • At peak temperature.  They get to cool down and warm up more, especially those with the external cooler.  I have three GMT900s and one of them has over 225K on its original transmission.  Fluid gets changed about every 36K miles, all of it.     It's not the bean counters, it was the government.  They had to meet CAFE standards and other government requirements.   To get around that, we tune them and modify them to our liking.
