1999 2500 Intermittent No Start!!

I have an early '99 2500, 454, automatic, 2wd pickup which has this intermittent no start condition. What is odd is that when you release the key from "cranking" back to "run," the engine will then sputter but won't start because its not spinning fast enough. I'm pretty sure what's happening is there is a no-spark condition with the starter engaged, but then the spark re-appears once the key is returned to "run." The issue is intermittent, especially after the truck has sat for several days, and/or its been damp outside overnight. Once it does start in the morning, it will continue to start all day, but does require excessive cranking time before it will light. I have swapped the computer under the hood with a known/re-programmed to the vehicle good used one, and replaced the ignition module on the back of the intake, along with the crank angle sensor.

Any ideas out there from someone who knows more than I do??

Thanks!!!

See if you can get an auto parts store to read codes, and go from there. Just because there isn't a check engine (service engine) light on, that doesn't mean that fault codes aren't stored.

The problem sounds like a fuel pressure regulator, possibly. If the truck sits a while you lose rail pressure. If you cycle the ignition to on, wait 10 seconds, then turn the key off, and cycle back on for another 10... this will run the fuel pump an extra priming cycle, and could make the difference. If this does make a difference, I'd look at changing the fuel filter as it may be restricted to some degree.

And clean your intake plenum with a good carb/choke cleaner, and check with the auto parts store and maybe get them to read some codes for you (it's free at Advance and at Auto Zone I know)... and go from there.

that sounds basically like what i am currently going thru, and why i am on here right now. my truck is a 96 c2500 with a 350. before it has had issues where it wont start all the sudden but this time it is attempting to run backwards sometimes even while cranking but mostly when you stop cranking. it seems to me the timing is being advanced very far forward, but my timing did not jump i made sure everything lines up and i do get spark and fuel while it is cranking. i have code p1351 high voltage for the icm. have you had any luck? i replaced my fuel pump since it wasnt working properly and was still under warranty

could also be a throttle position sensor or crank position sensor. Just went through this on a vehicle and they were both bad.

My brother has a 97 1500 same problem changed the distributor and solved the problem .The plastic distributor had slack ,you could see the rotor move over when you cranked it
