Headlight Fluid Needs Changed

I bought my 14 used so there is no telling what the previous owner had done to the truck. I am finding more and more things that was done. Like the headlights. Yesterday, I noticed that the headlight has a lot of water in it. I put headlight fluid in the title as a joke. I got under the hood and started looking. There are round caps on the back of the headlights that have had square holes cut in them. I am not sure what the holes were for but I think this could be what is letting the water in. The halogen bulb should have an o-ring that should keep this water out. Hmmm....it's a used truck no telling what was done. Ugh..

How hard is it to remove the headlight to put a drain hole in them?

I love the title of this thread!

Instead of drilling drain holes, remove the light, remove the bulbs and drain the water out of the openings for the bulbs.

To find the leaks, reinstall the bulbs, seal openings with tape, and dunk teh assembly in water watching for air bubbles and any sign of water intrusion.

i have cut apart headlights in the past and resealed them and they lasted 10 years. I used Marine Goop for the sealant and I would not use anything else after the results that I have had.

Good luck!

Something else you can do. Remove the bulbs and use a hair dryer to blow warm air into the housing. It may take a little while but once the condensation is gone it likely won't reappear. This from experience with another vehicle.

Make sure all of the connections going into the bulb are absolutely tight.

I hope to get out there this afternoon and wash some of the winter residue off. I am going to pull the water out with my vacuum pump. There is quite a bit in there. Did you look how deep the water is in the headlight? A hairdryer will do nothing for that all day today! Lol!!!

I did however buy some baby wipes and like your tip on using those. Thanks!!

Yeah, this will probably not happen today! A little more involved than I wanted to do in my driveway while it is still cold out. I do like those headlights in the videos. Pricey though. Hmmm

Do they sell just the round covers for the headlights? I would see if you can find a part number on them and if so order some replacements and dry the lights out as suggested before installing them. I've seen condensation in housings before but never inches of water...

that must have been the blinker fluid

You can probably order replacement headlight fluid here:

After I posted the thread, it dawned on me that it may have been blinker fluid. Oh well, missed opportunity..

This is probably one thing I should do. I will see if I can come up with a part number. Thanks for the tip.

My father in law was a car guy and one time when working on my old vette with him, he asked if I had changed the new paint dipole friction quinine valve when helping me with carburetor set up one time. I had to ask several times what the heck did he just ask me.
