Rough Idle

Recommended Posts

My 2014 CC 5.3 seems to idle a little rough lately. It has 19,000 miles and has done some towing. Anyone with similar experience? I'm going to use 93 on the next fill up. I am also thinking about an intake valve cleaner with the DI. Any ideas?

Thanks!

No catch can. I remember hearing ?sea foam? could be used to clean the intake valves? I'm hoping its just crappy gas, but it may be time to look into a catch can and or a cleaning. I was wondering if anyone else was getting a rough idle.

Same slight rough idle here on my 2015 @ 21,000mi. Thought it might be the winter gas. I ran a full tank with 2 cans of Seafoam, no change.

I just put in 3/4 of a tank of Shell 93. Is there anything we can spray in the throttle body to clean off the valves? Gas additives won't clean the valves with the direct injection.

Take it to the dealer, that is why we have a warranty. IF there is a problem with the valves due to DI, the more complaints and money it cost GM, the more likely they are to address the issue.

Mine has the same at 2100 miles. Started at about 150 miles. Figured winter has also.

Running seafoam in the fuel won't do much of anything for a Direct Injection engine. There are a few products designed to clean DI engines.

I've used the CRC cleaner with good results. It's very important to follow the instructions on the can. Some guys on here complained they didn't notice any improvement but they didn't follow through with the instructions.

You should also consider a catch can.

87 octane fuel always made my engine run like shit, especially once the engine had been running for awhile and I would be sitting at a stoplight. I run 89 at a minimum.

ressurecting a bit of an old thread..

just got a 2016 LT, rough idle (very noticeable on a bottle of water in the cup holder) in drive only (reverse is fine?) has 70 miles on it.

Make sure a spark plug wire didn't come loose, which has become an issue...

Our 14 started this a month or 2 ago. It starts then stops very short lived , been running 93 for the last 3500 miles now at 13.500miles

Haven't heard the wife complaining about it in a while

Remove and clean the throttle body, then I used Seafoam as per the instructions and it cleaned mine up great. Used it on my DI Camaro and the wife's DI 5.0 Mustang and it worked great there too.

These engines spark knock retard timing a lot on 87 and 91 octane. I generally stay with 93 octane or E85 from time to time.

A catch can is good advise for DI engines. I have them installed on the Mustang and will be installing on the truck soon.

Are you sure this is only at idle or even while driving. See the vibration threads.

I have a catch can, run Lucas cleaner in every other tank, and run nothing but top tier 93 octane in mine. After 30k, my engine is still very smooth

Well.. to be honest.. it is kind of bouncy compared to the 4 other K2 trucks I've driven..

I figured it just had the "bounce" problem and I was going to just put up with it. I'm so tired of dealing with problems after my repurchase I just want to give up.

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
