Plasti Dip coming off with tape

Recommended Posts

So I tried to plastidip my gmc emblems. The front isn't too bad. Just one spot on the corner where the plastidip peeled off and revealed the red. On the back though, it seemed like it was pulling the plasti dip off the red everywhere. What's the best way to prevent that from happening?

Are you putting the tape right up next to where you're peeling? The GMC lettering could be different, but my bowtie had a big enough gap that I didn't have to tape right up to the emblem.

Here's what I did, but I did put plenty of newspaper to keep from having all the overspray - no need for it to be there even if it does come off easily (which isn't that true if you don't have a "full" coat that will peel off).

Did you clean them to remove wax etc. before applying plasti dip? Denatured alcohol works great.

For the best results they should be scuffed up for proper adhesion also.

I cleaned them with a wet rag and dried them off with a cloth. As far as the tape goes, I put the tape of the emblem then found the crease and cut the tap. I pulled the tape off the red part of the emblem and left the tape on the chrome pieces.

So you didn't fold the tape into the crevices? I tried to make sure all the chrome is covered. Is it easier just to paint the chrome then peel off the chrome when it's dried?

When you pull the tape from plasti dip, make your last coat wet and pull the tape well before it dries. Otherwise the dip will pull off the surface. Also preclean with alcohol to remove wax and grease.

On the bowtie emblem, yes that was very easy just painting it all and peeling off what I didn't want on there. With your more intricate GMC emblem, it may or may not work out that way.

I'm redoing them now. On my last clear coat I will try to peel the tape off while it's still wet. Hopefully it turns out well!

Just finished! I had two spots to touch up with toothpick. How do I post pictures without tapatalk rotating them sideways?

Is it necessary to wear a respirator style mask to use plasti dip. So many warnings online and crazy tales of permanent long damage. If just doing emblems outside I can't imagine it being that bad.

Looks good!

I just did my front grill. Going to do the back bumper when it warms up a bit.probably my running boards as well. Debating doing my wheels. Not sure how they'd look black.

it's just like spray paint. In can form you won't be using much and it's not a big deal. When I use gallons of it and spray with an hvlp gun it can mess you up, always wear a respirator at that point.

My wife is familiar with permanent LONG damage!
