I am building a set of cornhole boards for friend and I am using a vinyl decal instead of painting the design due to the intricacy of the design.

I am staining the boards as well. How is the best way to apply the decal and poly over it?

Option 1 - Stain, apply decal, poly

Option 2 - Stain, 1 coat of poly, apply decal, remaining coats of poly.

Never done a board with a decal so this is my first one.

I would use option 2

I would think that the stain would leave an oily residue that the decal would not adhere to. Option 2 should lock the oils below the poly. I might put 2 coats of poly before applying the decal to make sure.

I just like the idea of protection on the stain. In case your sticker doesnt go down right it should be easyer to remove.
