Car Play and Android Auto Suspension

I have carplay in my '16 GMC and '16 car, I wouldnt let it figure into my decision to buy - its not that great. Just get NAV and everything else can be handled through bluetooth. Apple maps is very limited, google maps is probably better but I dont have an android phone so I dont know how it looks on Android Auto. I like using the phone for NAV but the other day I was in the Georgia mountains and had no cell phone coverage for an hour and needed to change routes. Apple maps did cache the route and the iphone GPS worked until I switched the route and the whole thing quit lol. Luckily I keep an old Garmin Nuvi that got me where I needed to go since I dont have factory NAV in the truck - just carplay.

There might be a reason GM isnt using it beside part availability, may be some kind of licensing thing or GM doesnt want to support either if there are changes and updates are needed.

factory navs need regular updates and they charge a couple hundred each time. And where do you think they get thier map and road data from? They buy it from google. Have you seen many GM mappig cars driving around?

Factory navs are a thing of the past just like factory rear seat video.

All that is fine and dandy until your cell phone has no data in the boonies, that was my point. You can always download all the NAV maps to your phone I guess, but I didnt plan on having to go through a different state and had zero cell phone coverage for longer than I thought...

My has-not-been-updated in three years Garmin Nuvi got me where I needed to go or at least where I could get cell service (as would the factory NAV if I had it), my iphone 6s with google and apple maps was good for a flashlight and calculator with no cell service - that was about it.

I just downloaded the maps for all of North America. Problem solved. Oh and the offline map will auto update itself when on WIFI so you always have the latest maps/roads for FREE!.

Maybe it is not 100% outdated yet more like 90% but give it 2 more years. I would even go as far to say I bet in a few years they just stop building in factory nav altogether as there will be no point. Its kind of like the guy that said 'Computers? pfft people will never use those in their homes!'.

The difference with Apple Carplay or Android Auto is that the interface itself comes from the phone. That means every time iOS or Android get updated then you will get an "upgrade" to your car interface with potential new features and refinements. As long as the protocol itself is supported by the phone OS then even a 15 year old car could be using the latest version of Carplay.

Good luck getting any updates or refinements to the factory system at all, much less after a decade.

So really the protocol itself is more important than how well the interface works in the first couple generations. Let's see where things are 5 years from now.

I'm not saying the factory NAV is awesome, I agree that it will go the way of the car CD player soon enough. But for now, IMO, whether a car has carplay/AA or not would not really affect my car/truck purchase decision. I can see automatic OTA map updates for factory systems included for a few years when buying a new car to extend the life of factory NAV systems. Phones have pretty much decimated the portable NAV market as well, but they are still selling them to someone :)

Protocals change, once carplay/AA goes wireless the older protocals may or may not be supported by newer phones down the road.

Fair enough, but I personally would get a lot of use out of Carplay so it really *is* something that affects my decision.

It's certainly possible that Apple could deprecate the current Carplay protocol or abandon it, but even if they come out with an updated or replacement protocol I find it somewhat unlikely that they wouldn't have at least basic compatibility for older Carplay protocols. Apple, after all, is in the business of selling phones. Offering compatibility with your old car would only be a selling point for them. They don't really stand to benefit by dropping support for older cars unless the cost of keeping compatibility gets too high from a maintenance perspective.

Number one, I understand you frustration. IMO Apple Car Play is awesome and totally worth having, its far more refined than AA (<- its kind of clunky) ACP and works flawlessly with some limits while driving, which I can respect. Phone, music, Siri, iphone nav w/traffic all works extremely well even after the iOS 10 update (there are no new features for ACP with iOS 10).

MVI is a vendor on there, I would call them and ask about adding to the 2017's before you loose focus, they are always on here offering feedback and will answer your questions.

lastly its your money, you want what you want. Simple!

I thought carplay was something I would get a lot of use out of, until I started using it :) I still use it daily, because my truck doesnt have NAV. It has crashed a couple times and sometimes will lose audio but nothing unplugging the phone and plugging it back in wont fix.

While I agree keeping support for older cars wouldnt cost much, but no one thought they would drop the headphone jack from an iPhone either ;)

I was just about to contact them. However, I'm getting even more stressed out because I just got off the phone with OEMAUTOPARTSCO.COM (another vendor similar to MVI) and was told they haven't been able to source the USB part required for Carplay for over two months now. So according to what he is saying you can't get Carplay added to any Sierra at the moment regardless of model year.

I'm getting afraid that MVI will say that same thing. If this is true then GM may be completely discontinuing the part (or having an extremely difficult time getting it produced).

I believe its a supply issue, Ford just stated all 2017's are getting ACP (+most vehicle manufactures at looking to add it), so now company's are in extreme competition to get the parts. Some folks on here already stated the issue overseas (natural disaster) with GM's supplier.

GM sold a lot of vehicles b/c of Apple Car Play, they will get continue to offer it once supply constraints are off.

I guess I need to sale my truck at a high premium!

This whole ordeal is a bunch of bull****. I ordered mine exactly the way I wanted from the factory and they upped the price of the 6.2L by $200 so when I wrote the check before the rep went over the truck in detail all seemed right. Then the big surprise that a $200 credit was applied which made all the $$ correct before I had a chance to see it. I was sold on GMC bc of AA and likely would have waited had I been told that option was off the table. Now the dealer owes me the $200 which they agreed to. I told them to email me a confirmation of that and wait a few months in case GM issued a bulletin that it could "now be added." I'm losing faith in that option so he'll likely be writing me a check. I was given a great deal trading in a F150 but furious at GMC for the way they've handled the whole thing.

I feel your pain. I ordered my truck before the announcement in May, received it in June (with no AA or CP) and went at GM customer service for a few weeks.... then they called me one day and wanted to close the file or words similar to that. I said dream on, I ain't done yet. I am waiting to see when AA/CP starts being offered again and then want one to be installed in mine too. I realize that IF they ever become available, it won't probably ever happen, but you won't know if you never try. The whole thing has made the purchase of an awesome truck really dissatisfying. Do they really not care at all about their customer's? Even if I had an option at some time during the build to upgrade (which I think they should have done automatically to an IO6) would have been better. In my case (as I stated in a previous post), the first indication of this issue was when I was basically 5 minutes away from walking out the door with the keys in hand. To date, I have never received the $200 credit on my purchase (just like diwilli), I kind of want the dealer to keep it as I feel that if GM won't fix this, the dealer will do something for me. Maybe just a mental thing for me, but I feel if I take the credit I have accepted GM's settlement for a non AA/CP Silverado.

FWIW, you can also run googlemaps on a iphone. (the wife has and runs both on her apple)

Google map does not work via Carplay on an iphone, unless they changed something since yesterday.
