Yeah, well the BP near me has E85 for 10¢ cheaper than 87.  They can keep it.  I'm not Einstein but I can do math.

Commodity market close Friday... ethanol $1.30, Gasoline $1.36

That BP pricing is more in line with the actual market cost for ethanol and refined gasoline.  And if the spread was like that in my area, I wouldn't use E85 either.   For me it is simply cost per mile.   I use whatever fuel (E0, E10, E15, E20, E30, E50, E85) that provides the lowest cost per mile for me.  I am fortunate that the Murphy station near me is screwing up and providing E85 at the pump for $.99 a gallon.

That is why I have grown very fond of flex fuel engines.  They allow me to pick and choose as I see fit the fuel I want to use that offers the best value. My biggest beef is the reduction in flex fuel engine offerings coming out of the OEM's now.

When I was using flex fuel in Texas my local Kroger was selling it quite a bit cheaper than reg gas. Especially using their card. Normal I had a tune using the premium tune giving me 15-20 HP bump. It was nice with my 14 GMC to be able to use E-85 local and reg gas on trips. Even if E-85 was higher it still would have been cheaper than premium fuel with a tune. I obviously was interested in the performance of E-85, my truck was a different truck on it. Good stuff.

My custom tuner Diablew has probably looked at many thousands of engine data logs. He told me to run 89 octane in my 5.3 and 6.0 engines even without the tune, and I noticed +3 mpg on my 2500HD, up from 10 mpg on 87 octane (we have 75+ mph speed limits on Texas highways), and better, smoother performance. He says stay away from generic and Shell gas. The canned DiabloSport and custom Diablew tunes really woke up my 2013 GMC 2500HD 6.0 and 2008 HUMMER 6.2 engines. Of course I have always run 93 octane in the 6.2.

This from my 2005 2500HD owners manual:

"If you have the 6000 V8 (VIN Code N) engine, use premium unleaded gasoline with a posted octane of 91 or higher for best performance. You may also use middle grade or regular unleaded gasoline rated at 87 octane or higher, but your vehicle’s acceleration may be slightly reduced."
