Tools needed for long trips

Recommended Posts

I'm heading to Florida at the end of July with my girlfriend in my 2008 GMC Sierra truck has already been gone over and all repairs are done, but I'd still like to keep some tools on hand,so question is,is there any certain size wrenches and sockets I must have on hand that are widely used and anything else I should consider,my tool box is an old ammo can so it is rather small. Thanks Rich

I keep a small tool box under the back seat with the following:

flat and phillips screwdrivers

standard socket set & wrench

adjustable wrench

tape measure

utility knife

pliers

side cutters

flashlight

leather gloves

rags

Any repair that requires more than that, i'm probly not doing on the side of the road.

I carry 50 lbs or more of tools, it's almost like the MacGyver of tool boxes. But that's great advice from coke813, your travel tool box need to have items that can make a repair on the side of the road.

My II Cents.

I'm a fanatic about maintenance so road side repairs are pretty much non existent for me.

I have a 3 drawer tool box in my truck at all times though just in case. The tools have been used to help someone on the road and at boat docks and lakes.

It's a piece of mind for me, loaded for bear. :happysad:

Electrical tape, fuses, duct tape, and assorted hand tools/sockets. A quart of oil, a rag or two, and a couple of extra bulbs. We were about a thousand miles from home once and had a burned out brake lamp bulb. No one was open and it took us until the next day to find a bulb (standard 3157 bulb) and I always carry an extra bulb or two on long trips ever since.

Bottle jack, 4 way lug nut wrench and make sure the spare will drop for under the truck. Spare hoist mech tends to seize up when you need it.

Well if I could list everything I have in my bed toolbox my hands would get tired. The toolbox has to be well over 300 lbs I would think. Enough to the point that I swear it lowered the rear a tad. One thing that people haven't mentioned is a tire plug kit. That way you can just take 2 minutes to plug a hole without having to put a spare on and then find a tire shop and have to pay at least $15 to patch it.

Walmart will do it for $10. Be prepared to wait over 2 hours.

about two months ago, I went on a trip to Baltimore to attend a convention with a couple of friends in my Aveo, for that trip, I carried a quart of the oil I prefer (vavoline conventional 5W-30) a gallon of water (in case of coolant loss) a bag full of fuses and relays I pulled from various aveos in junkyards (even the 100 amp Main Mega fuse that has to be unbolted from the UBEC) and my trusty 30 piece Kobalt socket set.
