Charging sys failure

05 Sierra - Just got the message on my display "Charging sys Failure". Smell like an electrical burn. Voltage dropped to around 11. My battery has gone out before but not with this message. Assuming it's the alternator. Read a few things and it seems like it goes from Alt to alt/battery to alt/ battery module. Any suggestions? Reading other blogs, it doesn't sound good.

Try a known good battery, and get a voltage reading on it when running. Next step is the "toaster" , which is a Load tester, put in on the terminals, and press the button for like 14 seconds and watch the meter, will tell you if your alternator can keep up... Good luck, and dont trust the inside truck gauges for voltage, put a real meter on the battery. Good luck!
