Leased a '16 Silverado double cab 4x4 V8...Wow!

After owning an '05 Avalanche for over 9 years, I finally traded it at 165k miles (Castec) for a lease on a '16 double cab 4x4 Silverado with the L83 V8. What a difference ten years makes.

I've leased/owned many GM trucks and SUV's over the years, and have put up with a lot of torque management. The most noticeable model being an '05 Trailblazer, offering next to nothing off the line. Second being the '05 Ave., which I tuned to remove most of the engine/trans TM, helping some. If the AC was running on either, forget about it. The new truck is a pleasant surprise. While the 1-2-3 shifts take some getting used to, punching it provides plenty of torque and urgency to move. And it doesn't stop, powering right through shifts, no holding back. And, power doesn't drop much when running the AC.

Love the truck, powertrain and the solid chassis. Still think they should mount the rear shocks outboard, bounces around like crazy compared to the rear coils on the Ave.. But that's apples/oranges.

I've asked about/mentioned GM torque management on a few forums over the years (including HP Tuners), which always seems to be somewhat taboo. As far as I know, the old CK trucks had none with the 5.7, and snapped off the line (gave what they had). With the 5.3, torque has always been controlled to some degree. The latest engine may have enough power, with a trans that can handle it, that it isn't noticeable. I haven't even tried tow/haul mode, which was the best way to test the older trucks.

Anyone care to discuss?

I'm pretty darn happy with the 5.3 in my Silverado I have the 3.42 rear end which really helps.

Try having major turbo lag in a Duramax off of the line :( But once it hooks up, it's great.

Also have the 3.42, as I did with the Avalanche. Was a big deal to have the 3.73 back when I had S-10s with the 4.3 engine. Or, the 4.10 in the ZR-2. The new trucks definitely make it work with the 3.42.

My last truck was a '08 Silverado reg cab short bed 4x4 with 5.3 and 4l60 with 3.73 gears. It had so much tq mgmt that it would struggle to even chirp the tires from a stop. My 2016 double cab Z71 with 5.3, 6l80, and 3.08 gears definitely has more power getting to the tires. I've got this truck to spin both tires thru 1st gear with the exact sime tires I had on the '08.

I think they gut have better weight balance and can put more power down without the back ends going wild. Plus tires have improved greatly too.
