Okay I know I'm not the only one out there who wants more power in their truck. I've got the '15 1500 with the 5.3 and these trucks have a great warranty with them. Pretty sure it's a 5 year 100,000 mile one. I really would like to put in a chip for better gas and to make it fast when I want too. There's a catch... I don't want one that will tell my computer in my truck the codes that have been put in or removed so I can keep the warranty on my truck incase something does happen. Does anyone on here have some experience with these chips and know of one's that will fit this truck and not show up?! Right now I just have the K&N blackhawk intake on it. I would really appreciate any help!

K&N intake is also doing diddly for you unless you tune and run premium gas at the same time. CAI is snake oil on these trucks as plainly the factory airbox supplies more than enough air. Sure if you do other stuff like headers exhaust tuning premum gas then a CAI is great to top that all off but just slapping on a CAI is in no way 'bolt on horsepower'. K&N or whoever can post all the Dynos they want all day but science & real world testing proves otherwise and even Dr. Oz can show pictures of fatties getting slim on a magic pill dont mean it actually works. IMHO the only thing a CAI is good for in these is to make you $500-600 further away from the $4-5k it would cost to buy a real supercharger and go big http://www.magnacharger.com/p-127-silverado-2014-53l-direct-injection-radix-supercharger.aspx. Looks nice when you open the hood I suppose though.

No such thing as a "chip" anymore. Everything is done via handheld tuner or custom tuning company.

LOL think I see that one. They went through all this Dyno testing and then at the end dismantled the chip and had an engineer reverse engineer it. Literally all it did was power the LED for eco & sport mode.

 

It would at least not toast your warranty since it did nothing lol.

I really didn't know much about this stuff. I had a friend tell me a chip or tuner is the way to go. Do tuners really help any? And if they don't then what do I need to do to get more power and not cost me $6000? Lol

Hate to break it to you, but just replacing the intake tube with an Airaid M.I.T. tube which keeps the factory filter box with a normal paper filter flows as good or better than a full air intake kit and it's way cheaper. I actually just bought the M.I.T. tube because it looked better and gives better access than the big stock tube. Also any kind of air intake kit or just the tube won't do much if you have stock exhaust in my opinion.

 

As stated, you don't add chips anymore, it's all tunes which if you take it to a dealer they can find that you changed the tune even if you put it back to stock.

 

I have the Airaid MIT, Flowmaster single in/dual out exhaust and I started to use mid-grade gas (89 octane where I live) and it seems to have helped a tiny bit. Could also be the placebo effect.

 

Lastly you can't really add power and gain MPGs at the same time. Takes gas to make power. There's not really a simple bolt on part that will give any real gains that you can feel. An air intake kit that says it will help gain, lets say 10 HP, you won't feel. Plus that 10 HP is when it's at cold startup before the engine bay gets hot after the engine gets to operating temps. Once the engine gets to operating temps and the engine bay gets hot that HP drops down to about 2-3 HP. You're not going to feel 10 HP let alone 2-3.

To add power you will spend thousands, no way around that (also GEN5DIY has those chargers on for about $4500, never buy direct from manufactuerer they never have sales :) ). Tuners do help as they change the air/fuel mix, however every single one will tell you to run premium gas. So that is an extra expense. Technically you could just run premium and gain some HP anyway since it burns hotter the higher the octane level. Tuners will absolutely void your warranty, people may say just disconnect before you ever take it in but I would not bet on that one personally. I am sure GM logs usage and fuel levels etc. I am a programmer and IT specialist by trade and can say that if I was involved it would absolutely log all that stuff, I give credit to GM for being at least that smart if not smarter. Could someone with super comptuer skills or even me go in and 'crack' GM software and wipe or fudge the logs .... possibly anything is possible but I would charge hundreds of dollars an hour just to try and could not guarantee anything since it is all proprietary software. IMO not worth it and would not even try on my own truck even though I plan to do stuff like swap out CPU's & add Android Auto and do not care about my warranty really since I can work on it and have friends etc. I maintain my vehicles immaculately, learn what to do when needed and am my own warranty.

 

I plan to add exhaust, headers, turbo or supercharge and possibly Cam shaft & rods but will not even bother with a tuner except to change my speedo for 35inch tires. IMO if you are not getting those HP gain running 87 octane/regular gas then it really does not count. Besides if I wanted the most powerful truck I would be in a standard cab/shortbox which has the shortest driveshaft to RWHP.

So what kind of tuner do you have and would you recommend spending the money on one? Or would you recommend buying an exhaust? And does anyone have any experience with electric cutouts on these trucks?

Tuners help. The extent to which they help varies, but with 93 gas, I assume you could expect in the range of 10%-12% on peak HP, all other things being equal.

 

That's not the entire story, though. Many tuners allow one to manipulate TCM (trans control module) settings, remove some nannies, such as torque braking control... things of that sort. You can get crisper shifting--- and, I am sure on some of them, change shift points and such.

 

Driveability improves. That was my experience.

 

Now, back in the day, one programmer manufacturer CLAIMED that they could prevent the manufacturer from detecting the presence of an aftermarket tune (assuming you re-flashed back to stock before going in). Is this true? I have no way of knowing to be sure. Don't work for them, or any of their competitors.

 

My take (just MY opinion): If you tune, expect your (powertrain) warranty to go bye-bye. It may not, but electronics have come a looooong way since i tuned my '07. I would have to assume that the big 3 have methodology to detect tuning....certainly now-a-days.

 

To be fair, the warranty is assumed to cover a vehicle, as sold. Not "as modified". The powertrain warranty is set and applied based on reliability testing, modelling, accelerated life testing, and, as much as possible, actual road testing on the "AS BUILT" vehicle. You mess with that, you increase the probability of a warranty concession.

 

Should you be able to tune? Absolutely, in my opinion. Do you have the right to expect warranty coverage on any components effected by your tune? I don't believe so.

 

Gotta pay to play. If you want to tune, go for it. Just accept that your warranty on powertrain components may be shot.

Takes a lot more to get a noticeable addition of power in a V8 versus a smaller motor.

    • I have a `25, 1500 that auto sets on incline. Never knew that at first. I have the electronic shifter. Just think if it didn`t do that? Unlike a mechanical shift that you can muscle out of park, how would you get this thing out? That would be a problem.   What I found out later is, I don`t have to push the button to release. Just put it in gear.   Setting parameters? Don`t know if it`s possible.

I usually set the parking brake (habit) when on flat ground for typical driving.    When backed down on the launch ramp to launch the boat and I place gear selector into Park, the parking brake activates automatically. My second nature is to set parking brake manually and noticed I was turing the parking brake off.  The parking brake appears to be setting itself automatically.   I looked all over my owner's manual and only found references to being on an incline and manually setting parking brake, or at times parking brake will be auto engaged, but nothing specific to my situation.    When is the parking brake automatically engaged?  Under what specific circumstances?  Can the auto set parameters be changed?     I like the auto set feature.  It would be nice if always engaged when shifted into Park and released when shifted out of Park (like my wifes 2025 RAV4).   Thanks!

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
    • Can it still be Assembled II?   Viscosity on the decline by various means. Heat on the rise making that worse. Engine RPM in the tank. Smaller motors with more boost trying to emulate an electric motor. Full torque, zero rpm. Then we will triple the OCI. Argh.    But wait....there is more. LSPI has pushed a shift from Ca to Mg and as that cost more PLUS the run to lower sulfur compounds the TBN is moving in the wrong direction for the increased OCI's demanded.    That not being enough to placate a demand for a parameter they can't measure the other sulfur bearing compounds are also under attack. That would be zinc and phosphorus sulfonate compounds. To some degree those are being replaced with boron esters and others, i.e. titanium ect. All of which have shorter service lives. And there there is the "Secrete Sauce" marketing for AW adds that 'Can't be detected by UOA's" but trust me because I (the blenders) never ever lie.    Spoiler alert; ALL additives are sacrificial! Smaller amounts of the old blended with less robust versions of the new do not equal longer service lives. So what are the blenders recommending? Wait for it.......   MOVING THE GOAL POSTS! OMG      Let's declare the long standing TAN/TBN crossover irrelevant and tell people that soot is a great 'graphite' based lubricant which can aid tribo films. Wait, what? Let's declare that the standards used for oxidation and nitration were to conservative and can be expanded. Let's tell them that because GDI fuel dilution, although being a VISCOSITY KILLER and an acid generator is actually okay because we have better base oils that limit viscosity failure limits. (Said knowing this is measured in fractions of a centipoise and in bases not commonly used in shelf oils)   Lying from the heart is not just the new normal but we have a public, a very young public, that is so ignorant of the facts and so sure of their "RESEARCH" into AI driven models base in regurgitated  instead of scientific research based unvarnished, peer reviewed FACTS that the incoming guard is loosing their grip on reality and the OEM's are tickled pink while the blends bend the knee.    You have an ever limited set of tools to work with. And sooner or later those will be taken from you as the API and the EPA strangle the last remaining fluids from the system. What you have left is your wits. If you care to use them.    At some point in the very near future it will not longer be possible to do "What is best for the machine", and be replaced with "The best you have access too". You WILL be rewarded with half the life and twice the cost. That isn't that hard to predict.         
    • I trust you saw the other comment where he knew what he was talking about !. Yes, these darned newer vehicles with all their so smart they are stupid technology, goes and drains the battery down. As you might see my other comment, I installed a Noco 5 battery tender under the hood and at this point still have the cord routed so I have to lift the hood and then plug it in but am typically parked in a garage or a shed so its not risking the engine hood in the wind. That way I am assured or hopefully so of not finding I have a battery drawn down and can't even start the truck and that also damages the battery to draw it down too far.
