Help with exhaust question real quick

Hey guys. So on my truck I have the 5.3 with a CAI and the flow master super 10 installed. Single in dual out, sounds really good hardly any drone in the cab... I'm wondering because I do not have much experience being this is my first truck and first time messing with exhaust.

Does true dual exhaust mean it cuts out the cat? And if I do this would it throw any codes if anyone out there has done it already? I'm also wondering if it'll make it sound more throaty and aggressive.

Thanks for all the info!

I believe true dual exhaust means that you have one exhaust tube from each of the two banks coming off the exhaust manifold

Dual exhaust means each side or bank of the engine has its own run back to the rear of the vehicle. Usually somewhere in the middle of the system will be a cross pipe in either a H format or X format to help with scavagening. The cats are still present in a dual system and a single out system.

Do you guys think going the true dual route with the same muffler type will make it louder?

Mine without the dampener is a little loud not a canned dragster loud. But exhaust cutoffs in front the the rear tire I think would help, so would 3" tubes

Alright. Last question.

As far as headers go, in these new trucks are we really gaining anything besides sound? I've heard headers will make your truck roar? Is it worth it or is it too loud. The drone riding down the road?? Is this the dragster sound you were referring too?

I got the Kooks headers, but the catted y pipe. They offer an Off-Road (non-catted) y pipe. It's mellow-loud, no drone. But headers definitely give you performance gains, especially with a tune that maximizes the increased airflow available.

As far as my setup, it's Kooks headers, then about 2' of 3" stainless pipe, followed by Magnaflows second quietest free-flowing muffler, tip dumped down before the axle.cb1214103d759baa37a90e4d76b2bd08.jpg

True duals will make the sound lower volume wise believe it or not. I had true duals on my '98 5.7 and it wasn't nearly as loud as my '14 with a 5.3. The '98 had Super 40s with an X pipe and my '14 has a Super 44 single in/dual out. From my understanding, the volume of the 2 mufflers is the same, the Super 44 is just more aggressive.

There's actually 2 types of true dual. There's just true duals and then there's proper true duals. Proper duals is when you add the H or X pipe to connect the 2 sides too help equal the pressure. Regular true duals doesn't have the crossover pipe. Both have their on exhaust for each side I guess you could say. Each side has their own Cat and Muffler.

And thanks for that info SSguy.

I guess having true duals really wouldn't matter than. Looks like my next step to making it roar a little more is headers.

It sounds great on a cold start and I can give it has and push the Roma to around 2800 and it'll be throaty but after than it mellows out.

Kooks is the best out there?

Kooks is the best out there?

From my research, Kooks is one of the best on the market, running about $1600 I believe. But you'll also have to buy new spark plug cables, as the OEM ones aren't long enough. I also went with new gaskets and new headers bolts.

There are a few other really good brands on the market like Stainless Works, Doug Thorley, and American Racing. There's lots of threads on here where people post before and after dyno pulls, sound clips, increased MPG, etc.

Any gains found from any of these headers?

Can you post a few links? To the threads? I have already been browsing the muffler thread.

I've also read someone claim that if you use a dyno it won't give you the proper shift points if you're looking for that or the other stuff Diablo tunes offer ... Don't know how viable this info is though.

So I'm currently running magnaflow's 18" muffler, I forget the part number, with 3" inlet and exit. I wanna do a turn down like you've got. The only X factor is finding a quality 3" pipe to run from the 3rd cat to the muffler. So basically, you're already running the setup I want. How do you like it? And which pipe are you using and from where did you get it?
