Stock Trailer brake controller add on

So I have a 2016 SLT Sierra, it didn't come with the stock trailer brake controller. The one above the 4x4 control.

 

Is it possible to buy the parts and add it in? The dealer wants to sell me a aftermarket one and install it under the dash.

It can't be added after the fact.

 

You have to go with an after market one.

Correct can't be added. GM sells a plug and play unit from Curt as an option. Comes with a jumper from the junction block under the dash, and it plugs into the brake controller. No wiring or anything needed.

Just click on Trailering on the left hand side, the controller is the first picture in the first row of the 8 accessories.

 

Chevy, GMC, its the same kit for that.

The built in is nice but the aftermarket ones do just as good a job. Even better that GM offers a plug and play kit for those who don't have it!

The factory brake controller can be added but requires bcm custom programming and ipc custom programming and a chassis wire harness for the brake controller module expensive but can be done

At that point you're talking some serious coin though. It's not practical to add it after the fact, just get an after market.

Correct, the factory option is only $250ish installed at the factory, you will exceed that just in the GM controller part alone. Then who is going to program the BCM and the cluster since the dealer cant handle this, GM has specifically stated they will not over-ride factory programming for the VIN of the vehicle to add features the vehicle didn't come with from the factory. Chris White would then be the only other person who can program the BCM and ICP, even then you are taking a chance because once he has it programmed and GM pushes out an update that your truck has to get it will wipe out his programming and put your BCM and IPC back to the current calibration that GM has out for your VIN.

 

Just go the aftermarket route, cheaper and works just as well.
