Spare tire size with 22" LPO wheels

The 50 miles and 50mph 'donut' spares that the automakers supply with many (most) vehicles today are much smaller than the regular wheels/tires.

 

The smaller spare will be fine for the intended use.

 

The trucks don't use a 50 mile / 50mph spare. Since they can hold a full size spare, the truck comes with one that works just like a regular ole tire on it.

So not really thinkin I just bought 5 wheels and was about to buy 5 tires (for a spare) then was asked how come I just didn't buy a cheap 5th one for a spare .... then I thought to myself, yeah what were you thinking

 

Well I guess my thought process was to have matching all around. Then I got to reading and realized the spare is a 17, my OEM was an 18. I order 20x9 and my new tires will me duratracs 275/60R20 so doubt they will fit to be mounted.

 

If anyone could help what would be the ideal size to try and get a spare close to this? I plan on returning the one wheel though and hopefully find a cheap steel one or something for spare.

You'll find that the outside diameter/revs per mile are the same (or very close) the the 17, 18 and 20" tires that GM uses.

 

The smaller diameters have taller sidewalls, so they can end up with the same overall diameter.

Makes it so GM doesn't need separate speedo/odo calibrations for the different rim sizes.

Point was that if necessary a different tire outside diameter can be run to get the vehicle to where a repair or replacement can be obtained.

So any tire with the same outside diameter/rpm (close to same weight too i assume) would suffice

Yup, I don't think weight matters that much as long as it's balanced properly

Cool thanks. I'm ordering tires tomorrow I will ask those guys what they think then go check some options online .. wouldn't expect to need a spare right away but yeah.

 

Gonna return that 5th wheel though and get that $250 back

If you're only going up one size I wouldn't worry about getting a larger spare. Stock size for the 20" wheels on these trucks is 275/55R20 and you're going 275/60R20, which is also the size I have currently on my truck, as well as many other members. If I got a flat I wouldn't hesitate to put the stock size spare tire on temporarily

Im going up from 18s 265/65R18 does that matter? Or is the spare still the same size regardless of the oem

Like previously stated the outside diameter across all OEM wheel/ tire combos will be the same

That's true, I didn't even think that there probably isn't any room for any tire larger that 31" under there

I was able to get a 35" KO2 underneath, all I needed was to grind off the protruding excess of the hitch receiver on the inside and it went in
